The Center for Student Advocacy and Community (CSAC) celebrated its grand opening on February 8, 2024. Students, staff, and faculty joined the celebration and welcomed the new department to the campus community. With a mission focused on reducing student barriers and strengthening the UH community, the Center for Student Advocacy and Community envisions a future where every student feels like a valued member of the UH community, has their essential needs addressed, and is supported to achieve their academic and personal goals.

CSAC Grand opening

At the grand opening of the Center for Student Advocacy and Community, the UH community enjoyed refreshments from local businesses, opening remarks, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The first 250 attendees also received a commemorative plant and CSAC mug.

“It was very fun and great to see the space filled with people who are not always here. It allowed us to learn about the space and resources the center offers. The food was delicious, and the staff was nice and friendly,” said Jose Barrientos, a UH student.

“What we are witnessing today is history,” Michael Crook, director at the Center for Student Advocacy and Community shared, “and how we choose to engage with each other within these walls and what we will accomplish together will be remarkable."

The Center for Student Advocacy and Community also encouraged students to explore the space and learn about the programs and services offered including:

  • Together Thursdays
  • Cougar Cupboard
  • An In-person and Online Resource Hub
  • Study/Lounge Space
  • Community Lending Library
  • Registered Student Organizations Support and Collaboration
  • Planned Educational Workshops

“The Grand Opening was a wonderful opportunity to introduce ourselves to the campus. This office is special; it is a safe place for students, and the resources provided here can be crucial for many students' experiences. Hopefully, students will be able to make a connection and will remember where to go when they need support on campus. The outpouring of love and excitement from all who attended will stay with us for a long time and inspire us to do the best job we can.” -  Cougar Cupboard Program Manager Jessica Haney
