May 5th: CLASS Graduation Celebration

CLASS Coogs, the student organization that promotes the programs and events of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, celebrates you and all that you’ve accomplished in your college career. All CLASS graduates are invited to attend a free cap decorating party from noon to 5 p.m. in Room 210 of Agnes Arnold Hall. Don’t want to personalize your cap and gown? May 6th: African American Studies Scholarship Banquet on May 6

The University of Houston African American Studies Annual Scholarship banquet will be held, Friday, May 6, 2016 at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel. This annual banquet generates funding for scholarships for deserving students. The 2016 keynote speaker is Dallas Jones, President and CEO of ELITE Change, Inc., public affairs, strategic communications and business development firm with offices in Houston, Dallas, Washington D.C., Baton Rouge and Jackson, Miss. read more

May 12th: College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Convocations

The CLASS Convocations are where graduates march across the stage as their names are read out loud for family and friends to hear and cheer. The ceremonies are in Hofheinz Pavilion. The morning ceremony is from 9 – 11:30 am and the midday ceremony is from 2 – 4:30 p.m. read more

May 13th: Vizapalooza 2016: Data Visualization Challenge

The Center for Advanced Computing and Data Systems (CACDS) provides modern and competitive training in high performance computing (HPC) tools and platforms for cross-domain research. It’s sponsoring a May 13 showcase of the coolest images and movies about UH research produced by UH faculty and students. Prizes will be awarded. May 14th: University of Houston Commencement

The University Commencement is the formal university-wide celebration at which President Renu Khator officially confers degrees upon graduating students. The ceremony features the 6 p.m. parade of graduates and the 7 p.m. student professional in TDECU Stadium. read more


May 23rd – 27th: Boldface
A Conference of Emerging Writers

Boldface was founded in 2009 by the editors of Glass Mountain, the undergraduate literary magazine at the University of Houston, as a conference devoted exclusively to developing writers (i.e., anyone who has not studied creative writing at the graduate level is welcome). The goal is to give emerging writers an experience that is usually available only to professional writers: several days of intense focus on the craft of writing through workshops, readings, and craft talks. This year’s visiting writers are novelist Tiphanie Yanique, poet Lauren Berry and memoirist Kimberly Meyer. Yanique and Berry are alumnae of the UH graduate Creative Writing Program. read more
