Cynthia Freeland awarded grant from Australian Research Council

Dr. Cynthia Freeland is co- principal investigator on the research project "Taste and Community: The Cultural Origins of Personal Experience” that was awarded a three-year grant of $804,960AU by the Australian Research Council in December. The project involves philosophers in Australia, Canada and the United States, as well as artists in Germany and Australia. The primary principal investigator is Dr. Jennifer McMahon of the University of Adelaide in South Australia. In the summer of 2017, Dr. Freeland will deliver several lectures in Australia based on the research conducted in this project. Dr. Freeland is pictured here riding a camel during a visit to Australia.

Social Problems, top academic sociology journal, now housed at UH

When Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz became the new director of the Center for Mexican American Studies in August, she brought to the University of Houston the editorial offices of one of the nation’s top generalist journals in the field of sociology. Quiroz was named editor of Social Problems in 2014, making her the first Latina editor of a leading sociology journal. read more

National Book Award winner Robin Coste Lewis on campus Feb. 2

Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts and the University of Houston Libraries present Robin Coste Lewis. As part of the library's "Unique Holdings" series, Ms. Lewis will talk about her award -winning book, Voyage of the Sable Venus, as well as the pleasures and challenges of archival research. Joining her in the conversation will be English librarian Dr. Jesse Sharpe and library specialist Kristine Greive, among others. A reception will follow the discussion. The event is free and open to the public.
