The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at UH

May 2012 News Update

In this issue

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the May issue of CLASS, the College's monthly update of news and events.

The University holds its spring commencement on May 11 in the Hofheinz Pavilion. This year's graduating class is expected to be one of the largest in the history of the University, and CLASS will contribute more than thirteen hundred to the final number.

For graduating seniors, commencement is one of the proudest moments in their lives, and I congratulate them on their wonderful accomplishments. As dean, I take this opportunity to share with them my three favorite pieces of "dean-ly" wisdom.

First and foremost, don't let your post-UH life become a post-CLASS life. When you chose a major in CLASS, you chose to come to the college that taught you not only how, but why—and not only why, but why not. That kind of thinking will never go out of style, and it's transferable from one endeavor to another. That's especially important these days, when labor experts are predicting that college graduates will change careers—not jobs, but careers—up to five times before retirement.

My second piece of wisdom is this: as you move through your careers, remember, as Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Right away, get into the habit of giving. Until you can support your favorite worthy cause with your pocketbook, volunteer your time to it. Remember that the three things we crave most in life—happiness, freedom, and peace of mind—are always attained by giving them to someone else.

And that brings me to my last pearl of wisdom. The minute you get your UH diploma, begin to keep two on-going life lists. One of them should be entitled "This Is What Matters to Me." The other one should be labeled "This Is How I Spend My Time." Then, make it your ambition to align the first list with the second. Make your time matter! Remember that today is a gift. That's why it's called "the present."

Best wishes for much success.
