Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the new academic year! I always enjoy the start of a new year since a new year contains many new opportunities and possibilities. My many personal thanks to each of you for your extensive and purposeful preparation over the past few months so that we can continue to serve our students and community. It’s been long and hard, but we’re about to see the benefits of all that work.

I hope that the first day of the new year is going well, and that all our planning has made the many transitions and new tasks manageable. If you experience issues related to the reopening of campus and classes, please contact your department chair or supervisor so they can let me know. I know that Zoom had some issues earlier this morning, but those seem to have been resolved. I’d also like to hear about successes, expected or unexpected, so please share those stories, as well.

We are all still adapting personally and professionally to these extraordinary and unpredictable conditions, now including a storm that will potentially affect Houston later this week (please monitor the UH ALERT system...). I ask that we all remember to support one another and our students. Please consider the university’s central values of compassion and flexibility during this time and apply those principles to your teaching, research, and personal interactions. A little extra support, understanding, and caring can relieve frustration and stress and facilitate achievement and success.

I look forward to working with all of you this year! Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Thank you,

Dan
