Dear CLASS Faculty and Staff,

Warm greetings, colleagues! I am excited to be the interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. We are living in a time of incredible change and uncertainty, but it is a time that provides the opportunity to build a new, better future for our students and ourselves. I want to encourage everyone not to stake our future in the roots of our past; we need new perspectives, processes, and methods – a “new normal.” Much change is underway, on-campus and off. We are all receiving an intensive introduction to best practices in online instruction. We are all adjusting to life and work with social distancing and other health and safety precautions. Most importantly, as a community, we are all discussing and developing solutions and actions to address social and cultural injustice. Despite the many challenges and changes ahead, I am confident that our team is not only up to the task but will be leading the way.

As we adapt and grow, I ask that we treat each other with respect, kindness, understanding, and collegial cooperation. We must work together to create a healthy, positive, and productive environment by applying the core principles of compassion and flexibility in our interactions with one another and our students.

I intend to be transparent, open, and fair, and I welcome your suggestions, which help me make informed decisions and represent the college.

We’re in this together, together we will continue to succeed, and together we are CLASS strong!

Sincerely,

Daniel P. O’Connor, Ph.D.
Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and Professor, Health and Human Performance
