David W. Hawes, ’96 MPA, has issued a community challenge to benefit the University of Houston’s Master of Public Administration program, pledging $75,000 to support student scholarships and student programs. The Master of Public Administration Program (MPA) provides higher levels of training and education for pre-service and in-service public managers, public policy analysts and public officials to address major public policy issues. The UH MPA program has produced over 400 graduates for public service.

Hawes is a founding partner of Hawes Hill Calderon LLP, a consulting service to municipal governments, community organizations, and private entities, committed to making safer, cleaner, more prosperous communities. Hawes has served in local, state and non-profit leadership roles for more than three decades, earning his MPA from the University of Houston in 1996; he firmly believes that what he learned in the UH MPA program has been invaluable in his career.

Hawes outlined the motive behind his commitment, noting “my intent for providing this challenge grant is to actively engage my fellow Master of Public Administration Program Alumni and anyone who values the importance of good governance in the public sector to invest in one of the most valuable community assets in this region. When one looks throughout the Houston region, the graduates of the program can be found within all facets of government and nonprofit programs alike. Individually and collectively we are changing the face of this community. We represent the future and have a responsibility to invest, support and give back to a program that has the impact of changing individual lives, communities and the governance of our collective communities that make up the Houston Region. I urge my fellow alumni and others who care about the future of this region to invest with me to make a difference in the MPA Program.”
