Summary: A real oddity, and a pretty frightening piece of propaganda. With a completely straight face, ROARING ACROSS THE HORIZON chronicles and celebrates China’s development of nuclear weapons. After World War II, the Chinese Civil War, and the Korean War, the mainland Chinese feel threatened and insecure. So they join the nuclear arms race, enlisting an MIT-trained Chinese patriot to head up the project. One point of contention, though, is that his wife’s estranged father is a capitalist. Most Chinese dramas that make it through to U.S. markets are independent or semi-independent productions, which chafe against national censorship. ROARING ACROSS THE HORIZON, on the other hand, is a true blue piece of party-line propaganda. It makes for fascinating viewing.
