Dr. Roberta Weldon, Professor of English, received her doctoral degree in English and American Literature at Harvard University. She specializes in early American literature and nineteenth century American fiction. Her recently published book, Hawthorne, Gender, and Death: Christianity and Its Discontents (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), considers the ways that strategies of death denial mirror cultural beliefs about such crucial concerns as life’s purpose, the idea of happiness, and the nature of ethical relationships. Her essays on eighteenth and nineteenth century American literature have appeared in a number of publications, including American Transcendental Quarterly, Studies in Short Fiction, and Studies in American Fiction.
Dr. Weldon has received the University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Master Teacher Award. She has been named Mortar Board “Top Prof” on four occasions and Outstanding Professor by the graduate students in the Department of English. She also was twice selected the Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society Outstanding Professor.
She has recently taught graduate seminars in American Romanticism, Hawthorne and Melville, and The American Renaissance and undergraduate courses in American Literature to 1865 and in Nineteenth Century American Fiction. She has served as Director of Graduate Studies in English and has been a N.E.H. panelist and project evaluator.
She is currently a member of the Advisory Board for WITS (Writers in the Schools), a non-profit organization that works primarily with inner city and at-risk children to improve their writing skills.
