James Pipkin received his Ph.D. in English and American Literature and Language, with a specialization in British literature from 1798 to the Present, from Harvard University. His teaching interests include nineteenth and early twentieth century British literature, British Romantic literature, autobiography, contemporary American memoir, and sports and popular culture. He is the author of Sporting Lives: Metaphor and Myth in American Sports Autobiographies (2008) and English and German Romanticism: Cross-Currents and Controversies (1985), and articles on William Wordsworth, various studies of literature and other liberal arts, the short stories of Daniel Stern, and sports and American culture. His current research focuses on contemporary American memoir.

He has been honored as a Mortar Board "Top Prof" at the University on five occasions, selected as Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society Outstanding Professor in 1999, and received a University of Houston Enron Teaching Excellence Award in 2002. In 2003 he became only the fifth faculty member in the history of the University of Houston to be honored by the State of Texas with a Piper Professor Award for "outstanding scholarly and academic achievement." He is also Past President of the UH chapter of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.

A pioneer in the field of university-school collaboratives, he co-founded the "Common Ground" program, an institute for high school English teachers, which became the largest university-school partnership program in the country.

His administrative experience includes serving as the Dean of the College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communication from 1990-1996.
