Melanie Salome is a Houston Writing Fellow whose range of experience teaching first-year writing composition includes English as a Second Language (ESL) writers along with traditional and non-traditional students. As a Writing Fellow, she also has the opportunity to focus on writing pedagogy on a practical level, as well as theoretical level while supervising, mentoring, and learning from graduate student teachers.
Her teaching is informed by highlighting the significance of rhetoric in various forms of communication. Whether teaching online, in the classroom, or in a hybrid environment, her emphasis on communication lead to discussions on discourse communities and how these communities shape our everyday lives. Her research supports her teaching by examining the synergy between rhetoric, discourse, language, and power. Melanie’s most recent project, her dissertation titled A Critical Analysis of the Rhetoric of Education Reform in the United States, focused on how the social constructs of language and power promote policy changes within society. This study deconstructs the use of language through speech acts and uncovers the reproduction of hegemony by exposing how segments of student populations are marginalized.
