A Message from the Director

While times are trying, the well-being of our students, faculty, staff and alumni is still one of our top priorities. As we monitor the COVID-19 (coronavirus) emergency and coordinate with local and campus officials, we will continue to communicate changes to our community and work to accomodate everyone throughout the process.

Below, you will find the latest updates from the various departments here at the Valenti School of Communication.

Updates by Department

  • Undergraduate Advising Update

    March 25, 2020 Update:
    In compliance with Harris County's Stay Home, Work Safe order, all nonessential staff at the Valenti School of Communication are working from home. We anticipate that this should have minimal impact on our undergraduate advising process since our had already transitioned to online advising
    As a reminder:
    • Scheduling Appointments: Students are can schedule online/remote advising appointments through the Navigate app or email advising questions (e.g. major or minor planning, summer/fall enrollment, academic probation advising or review of degree requirements) to your major advisor. If having issue with scheduling your appointment through Navigate, please contact your respective undergraduate advisor for assistance.
    • Walk-In Appointments: Wednesday “Walkins” will be by appointment only until further notice. Appointments can be made via Navigate for online/remote (electronic) advising as stated above.

  • Communication Technology Center (CTC) Update

    March 25, 2020 Update:
    In compliance with Harris County's Stay Home, Work Safe order, all nonessential staff at the Valenti School of Communication will transition to working from home.
    As a result, the Communication Technology Center must close, along with other campus computer labs.

  • Media Production Update

    March 25, 2020 Update:
    In compliance with Harris County's Stay Home, Work Safe order, all nonessential staff at the Valenti School of Communication will transition to working from home.
    As a result, the Lance T. Funston Communication Center must close. Our studios, equipment checkout desk and TV control room will not be accessible until further notice.

  • Graduate Program Update

    April 28, 2020 Update:

    Perspective Students

    We are extending the deadline for Fall 2020 graduate program applications: 
    • April 15, 2020 — International students
    • June 1, 2020 — Domestic students
    As of April 28, 2020, in conjunction with the Graduate School, the Valenti School of Communication has waived the requirement for a student to submit a GRE score for consideration. If a prospective student has already taken the GRE and wants to submit the score, s/he can still do so. However, prospective students submitting applications from April 28, 2020, until June 1, 2020, will not be required to submit a GRE score.
    At this time, no more international applications will be accepted.
    We are willing to work with you to complete your application. Please don’t hesitate to contact us about your specific situation. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Jennifer Vardeman (vardeman@uh.edu) to discuss your situation.

    Current Students

    The deadline to submit your thesis to the college has been extended (see below).
    If you are working on your comps, thesis or projects and need additional time, please communicate with your committee. As we finalize the plan for this and subsequent semesters, your committee can help you come up with different options for moving your comps/ thesis/ projects forward this semester.
    Current deadlines:
    • Thesis: Deadline to submit to CLASS is May 6
    • Applied Projects and Comps: Grades are due May 11, so work with your chair to determine how much flexibility can be given to accommodate defenses, time for committees to grade, etc.
