Data + Feminism = Equality - In Person Data Workshop

Monday, August 26, 2024

3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Sharing Stories from 1977: Putting the National Women’s Conference on the Map, a NEH-supported feminist digital humanities project, is celebrating another milestone in our national project’s history this Women’s Equality Day… launching our new Researching the NWC page!

This complex searchable dataset on our new Researching the NWC page allows users to cross-tabulate facts and figures about the delegates of the 1977 National Women’s Conference, the first and only federally funded conference of its kind. This massive undertaking with more than 5000 unique datapoints is the result of multiple years of collaboration of technologists and humanists at UH and will transform what we know about women’s civic engagement and Americans’ associationalism in the late twentieth century.

Researching the NWC will present a first dataset, with others to soon follow, that reflects the work of over 2000 student researchers at UH who have collected qualitative and quantitative demographic research and cleaned this data effectively over multiple years. These students join a wider network of over 1000 students at colleges and universities in more than 22 states who have contributed to the project through biography and interpretive essay writing alongside collecting oral histories.

We invite UH students, faculty, and staff to join us in our debut of this search page and try it out for yourselves!
