Panos Family Endowed Lecture in Equity and Social Justice

Thursday, February 15, 2024

5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

“Who’s Afraid of Diversity? The Politics of Race and Education.”

On June 29, 2023 the U.S. Supreme Court struck down affirmative action, marking a significant shift away from race-conscious admissions practices in colleges and universities across the United States. This ruling is part of a broader national trend across K-12 and higher education. Texas, for one, became the second state to ban Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices at state colleges and universities. A considerable majority of states have introduced measures restricting DEI and critical race theory (CRT) in educational settings. The underlying puzzle this lecture will address is what this ramping up of the fifty-year history of attacks on race-conscious policies in education is seeking to secure politically.
