The 2022 Annual Lecture in Ottoman History: OTTOMAN CULTURE AND THE GROWTH OF CIVILITY, c.1600-1800
Thursday, April 14, 2022
6:00 pm -
While few historians today accept that the Ottoman Empire sank into a long ‘decline’ in the 17th and 18th centuries, they have struggled to replace this dismissive view with more compelling narratives. This talk will offer a fresher perspective, focusing on the history of manners. It will reveal how towns across the Ottoman Empire underwent a noticeable expansion of ‘polite’ society during the 17th and l 8th centuries, showing how these Ottoman experiences matched cultural transformations that were taking place across the ‘early modern’ world.
