Lab Manual: Helms et al., 3rd ed. ($50.80 available in UH bookstore).
Text: Purves et al., 6rd ed. 2001 W. H. Freeman & Co. (not required for lab).
Lab coats are required and must be worn to all labs beginning Sep 10th (5 points will be deducted from the weekly quiz grade of students not dressed appropriately for lab). Disposable latex gloves & goggles are recommended for some exercises.
Grading: This laboratory course is worth a total of 1000 points which represents 25% of the course grade. Each lab is worth 100 points, as of Sept 17 each lab begins with a weekly 75 point quiz and 25 points will be earned weekly in class by demonstrating acquired skills to the instructor. The last lab on human reproduction and sexuality will be a group grade for a group presentation on an instructor-approved topic and it is worth 100 points.
Missed Labs: There are no makeup labs for students after the week they miss is concluded. If students know they will miss a lab for some reason they must inform their TA in writing. They may attend another lab during the same week. We call this "guesting". All students are allowed to "guest" once a semester with no point deduction. Students more than 15 minutes late to class will not receive credit for attendance. Students with more than three absences will not receive credit for the lab. Excused absences require documentation and include hospitalization or the death or a direct relative (sibling, parent, spouse, child).
Special Situations & Services: Students registered in special problems, CSD, athletics or completing an academic incomplete must notify their TA in writing (e-mail is fine) during the first week of class. Free tutoring for 1431 lab is available in 124 S and 1431 lecture tutoring is held in room 114 S beginning Sept 4th schedule of hours is posted on lab exterior doors.
Suspected violations of academic honesty will be reported to Dr. Gray, Department of Biology and Biochemistry Associate Chair of Undergraduate Affairs. We will file on all suspected cheating. Academic honesty hearing may result in a zero, 0/1000, for the lab, termination of student loans and scholarships or suspension from UH. No lab grade is worth putting your academic future at risk.
