Campus Safety Guidelines to Remember During Winter

Houston, Jan. 12, 2018 —During this chilly season, the University of Houston Fire Marshal's Office would like to remind students, faculty and staff of several important campus safety guidelines. These include:

  • Candles are not allowed.
  • Portable space heaters are not allowed.
  • Extension cords are not allowed to be used as permanent wiring.
  • Lamps should be placed on level surfaces, away from things that can burn.
  • Bulbs that match the lamp's recommended wattage should be used (halogen bulbs are not allowed.)
  • Contact FIX-IT, a building coordinator or a resident assistant immediately if any discolored wall outlets or sparks from an outlet are spotted, or if a burning rubbery smell is detected, which can be a sign of a problem with the electrical system.

To contact the UH Fire Marshal's Office, call the office at 713-743-5858 or send an email to ehs@uh.edu or fire@uh.edu. The UHPD dispatch number is 713-743-3333. For emergencies, call 911 immediately.
