Houston, March 30, 2017 —Over spring break, students participating in the UH Energy and Sustainability minor program, along with representatives from the Office of Sustainability, UH Energy and the Sustainability Committee, visited NRG's Petra Nova carbon capture facility, located at the W.A. Parish Power Plant in Fort Bend County. The event took place March 15 in a partnership between the Office of Sustainability, the Energy and Sustainability minor program in The Honors College and NRG. NRG representatives led 22 students, faculty and staff on a walking tour of the W.A. Parish Power Plant and of the Petra Nova carbon-capture system. A joint venture between NRG and JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration, Petra Nova is the world's largest post-combustion carbon capture facility installed on an existing coal-fueled power plant. The carbon capture technology separates carbon dioxide from emissions, known as flue gas, from an existing coal-fueled electrical generating unit at the power plant. The captured carbon is delivered to West Ranch oil field through an 80-mile pipeline. Petra Nova is capable of capturing more than 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide a day, the equivalent of removing more than 350,000 cars from the road.
