Save the date! Public Art Day planned in the spring

By Richard Zagrzecki

Public art tours, music, food and children’s activities all will be part of the upcoming Public Art Day at the University of Houston.

The event, which is being hosted by the UH Public Art Collection and Blaffer Art Museum’s Studio Saturday, will be Saturday, April 16, from noon to 3 p.m. Activities will be centered in the UH Arts District’s Wilhelmina Grove, near the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and Moores Opera House.

Public art collection tours will take place every 30 minutes from noon to 2 p.m. and will highlight some of the unique and diverse pieces that dot the campus.

Two art activities are being planned. One will allow children to make their own piece of art they can take home. Each child who participates will be entered into a drawing to win art supplies. A second group activity will let families work together on a project that will be kept and displayed at UH in the café area of the Blaffer Art Museum.

Catered finger foods will be available to guests during the first hour. Food trucks will also be on hand. Performances by student musicians and student dancers will occur throughout the event.

“This will be a fun family-friendly gathering that will introduce more people to the wonderful public art collection here at the University of Houston,” said Michael Guidry, curator of the UH Public Art Collection.
