EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT � HOLLIE QUISENBERRY
 On
the University of Houston campus, we have a skilled team of
experts who work day in and day out to make sure our environment
is safe and free of hazardous substances. Hollie Quisenberry,
Environmental Protection Officer, is part of this dedicated
Environmental Health and Safety team dedicated to reducing and
managing hazards on campus.
Originally from Kentucky, Quisenberry first became inspired to
get into the field of environmental health during her very first
semester of college at Eastern Kentucky University when a
classmate talked to her about the subject.
�The next semester I took an introductory course and the rest is
history,� Quisenberry said.
After receiving her bachelor�s degree, Quisenberry took a
position as a restaurant inspector in Michigan with the Oakland
County Health Division. She then earned a Master of Public
Health from the University of Michigan. After that, she moved to
Tolleson, Arizona and worked as the Environmental Health and
Safety Supervisor for PepsiCo until 2010. She moved to Houston
and joined the UH team a few months later.
The Environmental Health and Safety staff assist the UH
community in responsibly managing wastes and ensuring compliance
with environmental regulations in regards to air, waste and
petroleum storage tanks.
�People who work in EHS are here to proactively manage and
control risks that are hazardous to people and the environment,�
she explained. �This department is important because we prevent
accidents and incidents across campus. However, if an accident
or incident does occur, our staff helps to correct the issue.�
On a regular basis, Quisenberry maintains environmental permits,
develops and implements occupational health and safety programs,
manages recordkeeping and reporting for the university and
assists with hazardous waste management as needed. She also
oversees Environmental Health and Safety at the Energy Research
Park and works on special projects as assigned.
�I like that every day is different,� she said. �What I enjoy
most about working at the university is the diversity of the
campus and all of the leading research that is going on here.�
