Members of the University of Houston Office of Sustainability will volunteer in a tree-planting event from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Jan. 28, in Memorial Park. The UH community is invited to participate.   

The event, hosted by Memorial Park Conservancy, Trees For Houston and the Super Bowl Host Committee, is one of several projects occurring throughout Houston to help beautify the city in time for Super Bowl LI, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 5, at NRG Stadium. Participants hope to plant more than 1,000 trees in Memorial Park.

Those interested in volunteering for the event can sign up online here. It will occur in Memorial Park along Haskell Street from Durford Street to Arnot Street. Parking is available at the Memorial Fitness Center (6402 Arnot St.) and Memorial Park Playground lots, and along the street at E. Memorial Loop Drive.

“The Office of Sustainability is proud to participate in this important tree-planting project for the city,” said Melissa Halstead, sustainability coordinator for the Office of Sustainability. “Trees provide oxygen, improve air quality, help conserve water, preserve soil and support local wildlife. Also, participating in this project will help to fulfill the standards of the University’s Tree Campus USA certification.”
