The University of Houston’s Office of Sustainability will partner with the UH LGBTQ Resource Center for the upcoming sustainability meetup from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Student Center South Skyline Room (Room 223).

The meetup, which is free and open to the public, will focus on social auditing. A social audit is an evaluation of a company or organization’s involvement and commitment to social responsibility. The goal is to assess how well an organization is doing to help both its employees/members and the local community through charitable contributions, volunteer work, sustainable energy and environmental practices, transparency and an inclusive work/group environment.

“Social sustainability is an aspect of sustainability that often gets overlooked or misunderstood. Essentially, it is the quality of societies, the ability of a community to not only meet the needs of its current members but also support the ability of future generations to maintain an inclusive, healthy society,” said Melissa Halstead, sustainability coordinator in the Office of Sustainability. “We hope this meetup will provide better insight into social sustainability and ignite discussions of how we can build a healthier, more inclusive society both here at UH and in the Houston community.”

The meetup will begin with a screening of the 30-minute documentary “Toilet Training.” The documentary addresses discrimination, harassment and violence that transgender people encounter in gender-segregated bathrooms. Speakers from the LGBTQ community will then share their personal stories in a panel discussion and speak with audience members in a Q&A. Free T-shirts will be available for the first 20 guests, and food and drinks will be served.

The Office of Sustainability and the LGBTQ Resource Center will also host a gender-inclusive clothing swap at the same time as the meetup at the LGBTQ Resource Center office in the Student Center North, Room 201. Rather than organize the clothing by both gender and size, all items will be organized by size only to include all gender identities.

Those who wish to participate in the clothing swap are welcome to bring clean, gently-used clothing and accessories to the meetup or to the LGBTQ Resource Center office. Students, faculty, staff and supporters may also donate clothing items for the swap at the Office of Sustainability at the Welcome Center Garage, Suite 151 prior to the meetup.
