IFMA Members Learn About Sustainability Efforts at UH

The Houston chapter of the International Facilities Management Association received a crash course in sustainability initiatives at the University of Houston earlier this month.

UH Office of Sustainability Program Manager Sarah Kelly, along with representatives of Lone Star College-Kingwood and San Jacinto College, took part in a May 5 roundtable presentation at the IFMA’s international headquarters in west Houston.

“The organizers put together this roundtable after receiving numerous requests to have representatives from universities speak about what they were doing in regards to sustainability. It’s great to have an engaged audience who are invested in the subject matter at a presentation like this,” Kelly said.

She presented an overview of sustainability at UH and talked about numerous other topics, including waste minimization efforts, sustainability in research and academics, and the history of sustainability efforts on campus. Her entire presentation can be viewed here.

“Everyone was interested in what the University is doing, and they had a lot of good things to say about our initiatives,” Kelly said. “I enjoyed hearing from the other colleges as well as connecting with people who have shared interests and are integrating sustainability in higher education.”

According to its website, IFMA was founded in 1980 and is the world's largest and most widely recognized international association for facility management professionals, supporting 24,000 members in 105 countries.
