Freshman Admission Criteria

EFFECTIVE FOR SPRING 2006:
Accredited High Schools
Applicants who have graduated from a high school accredited by either the Texas Education Agency or the appropriate Regional Association of Schools and Colleges will be admitted if they meet the requirements outlined below.

I. Automatic Admission Criteria1

Applicants from accredited public or private high schools2 in the state of Texas who rank among the top 10% of their high school graduating class and who apply by the published deadlines will be admitted.

** All applicants are encouraged to submit official SAT or ACT scores even if they are in the top 10 percent. SAT/ACT scores are required for applicants to the Hines College of Architecture, C.T. Bauer College of Business Administration, Cullen College of Engineering, and the Department of Computer Science.

II. Regular Admission Criteria

Applicants from accredited public or private high schools who meet one or more of the criteria listed below may be admitted to the University of Houston. All applicants under Section II must complete the high school academic core requirements with a GPA of 2.50 or higher and submit test scores from Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). Students meeting the following admission criteria may be considered for admission:

  • Top quartile (those who graduate in the top 25% of their class and have a minimum 2.5 core GPA and competitive SAT or ACT scores)
  • 3.2 GPA or higher in the high school academic core requirements with competitive SAT or ACT scores
  • Scores of at least 1100 (SAT) or 24 (ACT) with a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Meet UH Eligibility Index (combination of GPA and test scores)
III. Individual Admission Option

Applicants who do not qualify for admission under section I or II can apply for Individual Admission Option and request that one or more supplemental factors (e.g., socioeconomic background, high school learning environment, familial and economic responsibilities, special skills, talents, contributions, or extracurricular accomplishments) be taken into consideration. Applicants must provide a personal statement with their application which includes information as to why they should be considered for special admission, and the supplemental factor(s) that form the basis for their request. Applicants will be required to submit letters of support from high school teachers who can confirm that there is reasonable evidence that the student can succeed academically at the University of Houston. In addition to the supplemental factors, the Review Committee will take into consideration the applicant's grade point average and cumulative SAT or ACT scores when making their admission decision. In keeping with Senate Bill 1419, criteria similar to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Academic Eligibility Index will be used to determine an applicant's ability to perform college-level work. Students admitted under the Individual Admission Option may be required to enroll in enrichment courses and orientation programs.

Nonaccredited High Schools/Home-schooled Applicants

Applicants who have graduated from a high school not accredited by either the Texas Education Agency or the appropriate Regional Association of Schools and Colleges may be admitted based on their SAT or ACT scores. Documentation of non-accredited high school/home school is required. The General Educational Development (GED) is required for home schoolers applying for financial aid. A minimum of total score of 1180 on the SAT or a minimum ACT composite score of 26 is required.

Applicants in this category will not be admitted to the C.T. Bauer College of Business Administration, the Department of Computer Science major, or the Cullen College of Engineering, but may enroll in the University Studies Division. Admission to those programs will be dependent upon the student's academic work at the university. Additional information may be obtained from the college dean's office.

Applicants in the review category may submit additional material if such material would strengthen the student's claim for admission, i.e. an especially strong letter of recommendation or a persuasive statement from the student explaining special circumstances. GED or home schooled applicants will be considered for admission by individual review.

* All applicants, regardless of class rank, must submit SAT I or ACT scores. The University of Houston will accept the old or new SAT scores

Applicants who have been denied admission to the University of Houston have the right to appeal by completing an appeal and submitting a personal statement and two letters of recommendation.
