The mission of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston is to prepare individuals for industry management and leadership by providing a quality hospitality education and ongoing professional development, as well as to be recognized globally as a premier learning environment through teaching, research, and service excellence.
The Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston was established in 1969 by one of the most notable names in the hospitality industry, Conrad N. Hilton. Consistently ranked one of the top hospitality program in the world, our students benefit in countless ways from industry connections 40 years in the making, including twice yearly job fairs, a wide range of internship opportunities, and a well-palced alumni network. The Hilton College offers a specialized business degree that prepares students for careers in the world's top hotels, restaurants, resorts, casinos, and clubs. Upon graduating, Hilton students typically have their choice of job opportunities in the United States and abroad and always have a solid foundation for post-graduate work.
The Hilton College is located in a $22.6 million complex which includes an 86-room Hilton Hotel, a convention center with 40,000 square feet of diverse meeting space, including three large banquet rooms, two full-service restaurants, an industry archive and library, computer labs, quantity food service production, and product evaluation and testing. In addition to serving the public with our professional facilities and staff, the hotel acts as the laboratory for Hilton College students.
Don Sanders and Kathy Sanders Interactive Studio for Global Education
This state-of-the-art television/interactive studio allows the Conrad N. Hilton College to broadcast classes and seminars around the world, which gives students the opportunity to take a class live in the studio and interact with students from other hospitality colleges.
Hall of Honor
The Conrad N. Hilton College houses the Hospitality Industry Hall of Honor and Archives. This unique area provides the opportunity for students to learn from the leaders who built the industry. Displays feature historic information, personal and corporate memorabilia, and other items of interest. Each fall, an industry recognition event brings industry leaders to the College for an annual induction ceremony.
Fred Parks Wine Cellar
The Fred Parks Wine Cellar is a state-of-the-art wine cellar and teaching laboratory that is designed and dedicated to promoting the knowledge of the wine industry among hospitality management students. The wine cellar contains an impressive collection of rare and collectible wines featuring over 1,000 bottles from the early 1900s to contemporary vintages.
One of the goals of the Wine Cellar is to become an international resource center and a world repository for research, education, and training in the study of wine and spirits.
In Spring 2007, the Fred Parks Boardroom opened to extend this mission. In addition to displaying some of these wines, this room will serve as the fine dining venue for the University and provide our students another opportunity to exhibit their skills an creativity.
Library and Archives
The Conrad N. Hilton College maintains one of the largest hospitality industry libraries and archives in the world. Built in 1989 thorough a grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Library offers a noncirculating collection of more than 12,000 hospitality industry resources and references. Books, magazines, journals, audiovisual sources, corporate communications, graduate papers, and online databases address a number of hospitality areas of interest, including: catering, club management, cookbooks, facilities management, food and beverage, gaming, hospitality law and finance, hospitality leadership biographies, oral history transcriptions, lodging, nutrition, safety and sanitation, and travel and tourism.
The archives are the official repository for the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) audiovisual materials and historic trade publications. They include corporate papers and memorabilia from such Hall of Honor inductees as Conrad N. Hilton, J.W. Marriott, Barron Hilton, Lord Charles Forte, Vernon Stouffer, Curtis Carlson, Ray Kroc, Kemmons Wilson, Ellsworth Statler, Walt Disney, Bill Marriott, Howard Johnson, Robert Crandall, Paul Dubrule, Gerald Pelisson, Robert Dedman, Isadore Sharp, Col. Harlan Sanders, Preston Robert Tisch, and Laurence A. Tisch.
Computer Labs
The Conrad N. Hilton College offers students access to state-of-the-art computing facilities within the College. The three computing labs provide secured access to all University online materials, Internet resources, basic office automation and presentation tools, and hospitality specific applications.
These facilities, coupled with systems used by the Hilton University of Houston Hotel give our students the unique opportunity to gain a high degree of technical expertise that is germane to the hospitality industry.
Institutes and Centers
The College is home to three national research and information centers, two university institutes, and two centers of excellence that meet the needs of both students and the hospitality industry. Institutes and centers housed at the College include: The American Hotel and Lodging Association Information Center, the NACE Catering Research Institute, the Hospitality Financial and Technical Professionals Research Institute, the Hospitality Industry Diversity Institute, the Wine and Spirits Management Institute, the Gaming Education and Research Institute, and the Loss Prevention Management Institute.
A number of competitive scholarships and awards are funded by the College and hospitality industry. Applications are available each year from November 1 through March 1 for the following academic year. Applications are only available online at www.hrm.uh.edu.
