ARCH 2350:2351: Survey of Architectural History I, II
Cr. 3 per semester. (2-2). Prerequisites: ENGL 1304 or equivalent and sophomore standing. Survey of the history of eastern and western architecture and art from ancient Egypt to 1500 in the first semester and from 1500 to the present in the second semester, with attention to cultural, philosophical and technical forces that influence them.

Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 1360 or acceptance of portfolio by instructor. Construction of perspective, architectural forms rendered by light and shadow, entourage in composition, and use of color.

ARCH 2370: Architectural Modeling
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 1501 or consent of instructor. Project-based explorations of modeling techniques including milling wood, painting and finishing, photo etching, screen printing, and aluminum/acrylic/wood combinations.

Cr. 3. (2-3). Prerequisites: ARCH 2325 and PHYS 1301. Numeric methods of assessing wood, concrete, and steel structures. Introduction to computer simulation of structures.

ARCH 3326: Quantitative Environmental Systems
Cr. 3. (2-3). Prerequisites: ARCH 2326 and PHYS 1302. Numeric methods of climate analysis, passive and active heating, cooling, lighting, and acoustics. Introduction to computer simulation of environmental systems.

ARCH 3331: Computer Aided Design in Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Introduction to computer aided design in architecture, including three-dimensional modeling and two-dimensional drafting.

ARCH 3340: Greek and Roman Architecture and Art in the Context of Contemporary Work
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351. Examination of the connection between twentieth and twenty-first century architecture and art and Greek and Roman architecture and art. Students participate in discussions of readings and produce critical essays.

ARCH 3346: Precedents of Modernism
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ENGL 1304 or equivalent and sophomore standing. Analysis of cultural and historical forces determining the philosophies and interaction of modern thought and design.

ARCH 3347: Evolution of Architectural Interiors
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. The evolution of interior architectural spaces through the contributions of architects, designers, decorators, industrial designers, and editors. The house as a design laboratory and the integrated interior.

ARCH 3348: The American City Observed
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351. An exploration of the special and representative qualities of the built environments of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and lesser American cities and towns though the eyes of observers both native and foreign, expert and amateur. Students observe and document the built environments of American cities or towns of their own choosing.

ARCH 3349: Urban Expectations
Cr.3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 2350, ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Seminar reviewing and critiquing master plans for developing cities in this century in terms of expectations, real and utopian.

ARCH 3352: Architecture Study Trip
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: participation in College study abroad program. Investigates such issues as: the line between architecture and sculpture, architecture and structure, structure and ornament, architecture and landscape, and action in place. Topics vary with locations visited.

ARCH 3353: Architecture of the Middle Ages: Text and Building
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Western European architecture of the Middle Ages (ca. 300-1500), investigated through the medium of the built environment and through texts that reveal aspects of medieval culture, aesthetics, philosophy, and building techniques.

ARCH 3354: The Culture of Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351. An investigation of how architects learn, think, and work in our own time and times past. Special emphasis is given to the Modern Movement and its critics and to the thought and production of influential architects and theorists including Alberti, Palladio, Ruskin, Viollet-le-Duc, Guadet, Loos, Le Corbusier and Venturi, and Scott Brown.

ARCH 3356: City as Palimpsest: Paris
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Seminar investigating Parisian architecture and urban development from the Roman period to the present via the metaphor of the palimpsest.

ARCH 3358: History of Asian Architecture and Art
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 2350:ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Architectural history, methodology, art, and the cultural forces that shaped the Eastern tradition.

ARCH 3363: Architectural Communication Systems
Cr. 3. (2-3). Prerequisite: ARCH 2500. Graphics and graphic systems for architects.

ARCH 3365: Architectural Research
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2325, ARCH 2326, ARCH 2350, and ARCH 2351. Methods of research in architecture adapted to individual student-generated topics.

ARCH 3366: Materials and Methods
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 3325. Construction systems, advanced and emerging technologies, scheduling, and budgeting.

ARCH 3367: Sustainable Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: junior standing. Sustainable design strategies and logic, materials selection, construction methods, and energy efficiency. Indoor air quality, energy conservation, ecological impact of built projects, environmental regulation, and worker productivity.

ARCH 3368: Sustainable Development
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: junior standing. New perspectives in development: overview of environmental and ecological systems, land use, smart growth, new urbanism, traffic and transportation, brownfield development and mitigation, site development, and marketing.

ARCH 3370: Architectural Detailing of Furniture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2501 or consent of instructor. Design and detailing of architectural furniture. The course includes construction of designs originated by students. Interior Design majors are encouraged to take this course.

ARCH 3375: Architectural Design for Non-Majors
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: open to non-architecture majors only. May be used toward satisfying architecture minor requirements. Introduction to architectural design, theory, and practice. Students outside the College of Architecture work in a design studio setting on a variety of architecture and urban design problems. Project work supplemented by lectures, readings, field trips, and discussions.

ARCH 3380: Architecture Plus Film
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: concurrent enrollment in or completion of ARCH 3500. An exploration of the cross-fertilization between architecture and film by examining how architecture is represented in film; the narrative aspect of architecture, film as a mirror of the present and as anticipation of the future of architecture, auteur cinema/director vs. architecture/architect, and the idea of gesamtkunstwerk.

ARCH 3501: Architecture Design Studio VI
Cr. 5. (2-9). Prerequisite: ARCH 3500. A continuation of ARCH 3500 with special emphasis on the development of diverse building program in individual studios.

ARCH 4325: Building Systems Integration

ARCH 4333: Advanced Computer Modeling in Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 3331 or equivalent. Advanced techniques in computer-aided modeling, rendering and visualization, with an introduction to animation.

ARCH 4335: Digital Presentations In Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 3331 or equivalent. Exploration of mixed media in architectural presentation, including computer modeling and digital photography.

ARCH 4336: Graphic Realization in Design
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2501 and ARCH 3331 or consent of instructor. Integration of digital and manual graphic tools with verbal presentation to communicate design.

ARCH 4344: Architectural Programming and Building Regulations
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2325, ARCH 2326, ARC H 2501, and ARCH 3365. Methodologies for assembling a comprehensive program for an architectural project; basic principles of building service systems; codes, regulations, and standards; and the integration of these within the process of design.

Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350; ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Critical writing based on selected reading in architecture.

ARCH 4352: Wright, Mies, Corbusier
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ARCH 2350: ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Search for the truth studying Wright, Mies, and Corbusier in the perspective of historic precedents, as well as observing the effect of their work on architecture.

ARCH 4353: Postmodern: Architecture Since 1950
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350: ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. The theory and development of architectural design of the most recent times. Studies in architectural pluralism in the 1960s and 1980s.

ARCH 4355: Houston Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Survey of Houston architecture, past and present.

ARCH 4356: American Architecture 1785-1915
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350; ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. American architecture from the early Federalist period through the height of the Craftsman Movement.

ARCH 4357: Modernism in American Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 2350; ARCH 2351 or consent of instructor. Exploration of the complex and often conflicting sources of the modern movement in the United States from the early years of the twentieth century to the 1960s.

ARCH 4367: Case Studies in Sustainable Architecture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: ARCH 3325, ARCH 3326, ARCH 3365, ARCH 3366, and ARCH 3501. Green Revolution, sustainability, and ecological restoration. Sustainability measurements including biomimcry, ecological footprint, embodied energy, and full cost accounting. Building components sustainability by CSI division. LEED certification overview.

ARCH 4370: Urban Environment I
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: completion of core English requirements; junior standing in major; 3000 level course in ARCH, ANTH, ECON, POLS, or SOC. An examination of the social, economic, cultural, and political development of cities.

ARCH 4373: Urban Environments
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: completion of core English requirements; ARCH 2350 and ARCH 2351 or SOC 1300 or PSYC 1300, and junior standing. An examination of the social, economic, cultural, and political development of cities including the diverse needs, values, and social and spatial patterns that characterize different cultures and individuals and the implication of this diversity for the societal roles and responsibilities of architects.

ARCH 4375: Capitalism, Architecture and the City
Cr. 3. (3-0). Seminar exploring determinants of urban form throughout history.

ARCH 4390: Landscape Architecture

ARCH 5501: Architecture Design Studio X
Cr. 5. (2-9). Prerequisites: ARCH 3325, ARCH 3326, ARCH 3365, ARCH 3366, ARCH 4501 and credit for or concurrent enrollment in ARCH 4344, and credit for or concurrent enrollment in ARCH 4324 or ARCH 4325 or ARCH 4367. Design studio: comprehensive development of architectural design and building systems from schematic design through detailed development.

ARCH 5505:5506:5507: Architecture Design Studio - International I, II, III
Cr. 5. (2-9). Prerequisites: ARCH 3501 and permission of the dean. Corequisite: ARCH 5350. Design studio requiring overall development potentials and study of site(s). Actual problem areas vary by studio section. Individual and group projects concerned with the design of new structures within the historical context. Projects have a potential within the community for actual construction, although it is anticipated that solutions will range from pragmatic to theoretical. Drawings, three dimensional models, and descriptive text are generated to investigate the relationship between the projects and their respective contexts.
