Overview

The College of Business Administration (CBA) provides quality business education for over 4,000 undergraduate business majors and minors. The CBA has 80 full-time faculty with diverse backgrounds and major publications, and over 60 teaching assistants and adjunct faculty from the corporate community who teach and conduct research in the CBA. Strategically placed in the fourth largest city in the United States, the CBA offers in-class instruction that is industry-based, with unique internship and career opportunities.

Like the city of Houston and the University of Houston as a whole, the CBA student population is demographically diverse. Because of its high quality education, business environment, and scholarships, the CBA attracts high caliber students, including National Merit scholars who are also members of the University of Houston Honors College. The University of Houston attracts students from 115 different countries; over 400 of these international students are business majors.

Accreditation

The college is a fully accredited member of the International Association for Management Education (AACSB). Of more than 1,200 U.S. institutions granting degrees in business, only 355 are accredited.

Curriculum

To prepare students for the demands of the 21st century, the strategic goals of the CBA are threefold: (1) high technology, (2) globalization, and (3) entrepreneurship. These strategic goals permeate the design of the curriculum, which provides every business major with a broad exposure to each functional area within business through pre-business and business core course requirements, along with required university core courses. Students have eight areas of concentration within five departments to choose from for a concentration or double concentration. A Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree is available in each of the eight areas of concentration. A minor in either a foreign language or an International Area Studies, designed to broaden students understanding of the international arena of business, is also required for the B.B.A.

Minors are offered for non-business majors in accounting, business administration, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing.

Support Services

The CBA provides services to help business students plan their education and career, and finance the cost of their education through scholarships. Computer support services are available through state-of-the-art computer labs.

The Office of Student Services, located in 249 Melcher Hall, is committed to providing quality administrative, registration and advising services to currently enrolled and prospective students of the college. Students can access the Internet, the main campus office of university Career Services, company profiles, and career education resources from this location. The Center also maintains an active on-line job listing page, where students can review full-time positions, part-time positions, internships, and special project opportunities. Other features include the opportunity to sign up for on-campus interviews and register their resumes for referral purposes. Scholarships

All undergraduate students accepted into the CBA are eligible to apply for the CBA Scholarships. Every CBA undergraduate student is encouraged to apply, including current students, freshmen, transfer, and international students.

In 1998, the CBA Scholarship program awarded over $600,000 in scholarships to more than 380 deserving CBA Business majors. CBA scholarships range from $500 - $6000 and are competitively awarded by the CBA Scholarship Committee. Some CBA Scholarships are based on academic merit, some are based on financial need, and some are based on a combination of merit and financial need. The specific criteria for each scholarship are established by the scholarship donor and the College.

UH Business majors need only complete one CBA Scholarship application form to be considered for all the CBA Scholarships for which they qualify. The application deadline is March 1 for awards for the following academic year (Fall/Spring). Late applications will be accepted but will only be considered if there are awards remaining after the initial review.

CBA Scholarship information and web-based application forms are available on-line at www.cba.uh.edu or in 249 Melcher Hall, or by contacting the CBA Scholarship Office, College of Business Administration, University of Houston, Houston, TX 77204-6282.
