 We saved the best for last! Alumnus Joe Randol, who in 1947 won a student contest to name the UH mascot, dancing with Shasta during the Golden Cougars reunion in 2000. Joe’s winning entry, "Shasta," won over finalists "Raguoc" and "Spiritina." Inspiration for the name Shasta came to him, he said at the time, because the school mascot "Shasta have a cage, Shasta have a keeper, Shasta have a winning ball club, and Shasta have the best."
