The answer: The doctrine was both a movement to unify science on the basis of specified foundations and a theory of science. The foundational doctrines were flawed as is the case with all such doctrines. They must be revised and updated as their limitations are revealed by analysis and empirical findings. Compared to most contemporary deconstructionist theories of science, an updated positivist view has much to recommend it.
