Background

The course consists of 7 modules, each containing specific topic objectives, assigned reading, spreadsheet information and homework problems.

1.    Objectives: Specific objectives are described at the beginning of each module. You can use these objectives to guide your text reading and completion of the module activities.

2.    Course Readings and Problems: You will have readings assigned from your text and/or supplementary material plus assigned related problems (usually completed using Excel).

3.    Classes (optional): Students are welcome to come to class to discuss problem assignments and content. I encourage you to submit problem questions in advance via BBL mail (or e-mail).

Note: Class sessions will be directed on problem solving. You will get the most benefit from the class if you have done some of the problems and readings in advance. (You are encouraged to submit questions re problems in advance of the class (via email) and we will be sure to include them.)

Grading
Grades will be based on homework assignments, a team project and an examination. See the schedule for deadlines. Find syllabus details.

Homework

25%

The homework grade is based on three components. 1) There are seven homework checks/quizzes. These will be completed using BBL. These checks are based on the readings and the practice problems as identified in the BBL Modules. 2) Homework problems, as assigned in the modules, will be collected (see schedule) and checked for completion. 3) A comprehensive homework quiz is to be completed at the semester end. It is timed and open for a finite time, as shown on the schedule.

Spreadsheet Exams

60%

Two spreadsheet assignments regarding course readings and assignments on BBL.

Case

15%

Analyze an extensive data set of your own choosing or from those in the text. You may do this individually or with other classmates (recommended).

General Overview of the Assignments
BBL has a weekly guide to your study. You should schedule time each week to complete the assignments.

1.

Read the Chapters that are referenced. Work through the examples. Be sure to consult BBL for specific requirements. The study guide can help direct your reading.

2.

Work the practice problems that are referenced for each Chapter. Check your solutions with those in the text or the ones that are posted.

3.

Review the notes and videos that are posted. You might find some of the notes that are linked under Assignment Details to be helpful in solving problems - especially for using Excel. Note that this list is not comprehensive; see BBL for the complete set.

4.

Ask questions. There are several ways to get help. 1) Send an e-mail message to me. You will receive a prompt answer. 2) Come to the classes (see schedule). 3) You are welcome to come by the office. If you are on campus, feel free to stop by; if you are making a special trip to see me, I recommend that you contact me first. 4) Go to the lab and get help from the TA - Room 239 CAM. A TA will be available in the lab, and an on-line tutoring service should be available.
