Many students enroll in Psyc 3310 because they need to fulfill their writing intensive course requirements, or to fulfill a psychology major requirement. Students often enroll in the distance education section of Psyc 3310 mostly due to schedule conflicts, although some mistakenly enroll believing that it will be easier than the traditional section. Psyc 3310, whether distance ed or not, is a junior-level psychology course, with certain prerequisites -- if you have not met those prerequisites you do not qualify and may not enroll in the course. Please visit the "Should I even be enrolled in this course?" page for prerequisite information.
The DE section of Psyc 3310 is equivalent in content to a traditional section -- and in many respects is more difficult than a traditional section due to the distance component. Succeeding in a distance ed course requires a somewhat different skill set than succeeding in a traditional course. I highly encourage you to visit the "Should I even be enrolled in this course?" page, and take the brief assessment survey that should help you make an informed decision as to your chances of success in this course.
Orientation for this and most other DE courses is Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 9:00 am. See the DE Website for details.
Yes. It is imperative that you attend orientation, as you will receive a lot of information not listed in the syllabus. This will be especially true for some of you, as your WebCT interface will look quite different than what you are accustomed to. This is also the only face-to-face meeting we will have the entire semester. Anyone who has already enrolled for this course and misses orientation without contacting me first will be automatically dropped from the course.
Yes. Everything that we do in this course, other than the lectures, will be conducted via WebCT: exams, assignments, in-class participation, peer-to-peer communications, and instructor-student communications will all be conducted via WebCT. If you have not already obtained your WebCT login information, please visit http://www.uh.edu/webct to obtain it, and to get information on when you can expect to gain access to WebCT (usually not till the first week of class, possibly a little later if you enroll late).
Your first line of defense is the university's WebCT website, where you obtained your login information. There is an excellent tutorial available there. If you have additional questions, the friendly folks at the IT help desk have a lot of knowledge about WebCT, and are your second line of defense. You may contact them at 713-743-1411, or via the web at http://www.uh.edu/infotech
You may obtain a copy of the syllabus for your reference here, as well as at the DE Website. After the course has begun, the syllabus will always be available on the course homepage inside of WebCT, and will always be the most current version (in the event that there is a schedule change or any errors in the printed syllabus).
Textbooks for the course are as follows:
Both the Ott and the Spector texts are available at the University bookstore, as well as the usual suspects online (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Varsity Books.com)
You can obtain a copy of the broadcast schedule for the lectures at the DE Website; the broadcast schedule will also be handed out during orientation.
The DE Website has all the most up-to-date information as to where and how to purchase your tapes. Also, if you know someone who took the course last semester who can loan or sell you the tapes, the tapes are the same.
