Summer Book Club

Our Summer Book Club is gearing back up. Our dates are set: Wednesday, June 27 at 12 noon and Friday, July 27 at 12 noon. Now we just need to pick our books. Send your suggestions to wrc@uh.edu and then we will vote on suggested books. Remember, we read one fiction and one non-fiction book each summer. So send in the suggestions, then we vote, then we read, then we discuss!! The Summer Book Club is a collaboration between the WRC and the MD Anderson Libraries.

New Status on Women Report
The University Commission on Women, a presidentially- appointed commission, is pleased to release the second edition of the Status of Women at the University of Houston: Students, Staff, and Faculty report. Authored by three commission members, the report documents the status of female staff, faculty, and staff on campus. The report reveals that women have made some progress since the issuance of the first report in 2007, but also documents some areas where women still lag behind their male counterparts. For instance, there are continued disparities in the number of full professor positions and staff, faculty and coaches salaries. The report concludes with a series of recommendations for the campus community to consider adopting to increase equity for women on campus. Download your PDF copy here.

A Tier One University Deserves a Tier One Women's Resource Center
The Women's Resource Center is currently undergoing a self-study and having an external reviewer come to campus to evaluate our programs and suggest ways we can be a more vibrant and helpful center. Stay tuned for changes in programming for Fall 2012. If you have suggestions about what we can do or changes we can make, please do not hesitate to contact us at wrc@uh.edu. Thank you. We are here to serve the campus community in the best way we can.

My Safe Campus
Do you have a concern about the University of Houston that you would like to anonymously report? Perhaps the incident involves sexual harassment or assault, fraud, burglary, or an ethics violation. The University of Houston participates in the My Safe Campus anonymous reporting program. In addition to, or instead of, reporting to our campus Department of Public Safety, you can make an anonymous report to My Safe Campus. The report will be forwarded on to the appropriate campus personnel and acted upon. You can check back through My Safe Campus to see how the report was resolved. Let's keep our campus safe. If you know something, say something. Click on the link above to make a report or call the hotline phone number at 1-800-716-9007.
Of course, always feel free to call our UH Department of Public Safety. For an emergency call 911 and for non-emergencies call 713-743-3333.

The Red Flag Campaign

Last October the WRC is sponsored The Red Flag Campaign, a public information campaign on dating violence. Although the month of October has passed, the issue needs continued attention. Did you know that almost one-third of college students report dating violence by a previous partner and almost one-fourth report violence by a current partner? Dating violence can include coercion, stalking, jealousy, isolation, victim blaming, and emotional, sexual, and physical abuse. If you see this violence taking place in a friend's relationship:
Speak up - When peers say things that support disrespect or violence, choose respect and speak up for what's right.
Step in - When one person is mistreating another verbally, physically, or emotionally, step in politely to stop the situation, if it is safe to do so.
Talk later - Sometimes it is better to wait and talk to the abuser or the person who is being abused later, in private. The person may be less defensive and talk more openly in a one-on-one conversation.
Gather Resources - You may want to contact a campus dating violence program or sexual assault crisis center or community non-profit off campus to gather information about what to do next, and to seek support for yourself. Click on "Stop the Violence" below for local links.
Look out for the red flags and posters that will be on campus later in the month. Also, check out The Red Flag Campaign online. Check out these helpful handouts:

Rape Aggression Defense

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program taught by UHDPS officers empowers female students, faculty, and staff to combat various types of assaults by providing them with realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. This empowerment is taught through four basic principles: education, dependency on self, making one’s own decisions, and realization of one’s own power. For more information, click here.

The WRC is a Dress for Success member organization. If you are a female UH student who is job ready (within 30 days of graduation or scheduled for a job interview or job/ intern fair) and cannot afford a business suit for your interview, we can refer you to Dress for Success. You must come into our office and we help you fill out the paperwork and obtain an appointment. You will receive a professional suit, shoes, a handbag and necklace. Call or drop by our offices for more information.

Staff Spotlight
Nancy Hay
From the time Nancy Hay graduated from high school and the time she attended community college, she has continued to enrich her knowledge to generate innovative solutions to the workplace. She has attended various administrative conferences throughout her past 20 years. Nancy believes that a well-informed staff member in the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) can create the energy and climate where students can easily become creative.
Nancy began working at the University of Houston on June 7, 2007. She is an individual who interacts comfortably with her peers and the students she is involved with. Nancy has the quality to bring out the best in the individuals that she associates with, whether at work or in her private life. At the same time, Nancy is content to seek counsel so that the student’s involvement at UH are foremost in bringing student success. Nancy Hay strongly believes that if our students succeed in life, than we have accomplished our main task as employee at UH.
When asked why she chose the kind of work she does, she responded: “My position as an Office Coordinator is finance and administrative duties; I also volunteer in the department for various CSI functions in assisting students for outgoing events. I love to make a difference to better the University of Houston students and staff. I love the students at U H and it is a pleasure to see them grow, graduate and become great professionals in our society.” Nancy’s strength as a woman who empowers is to effectively listen to people and the ability to cultivategood sources of information so that people will be encouraged to share their knowledge and succeed in life.
Words of encouragement Nancy would give to other women are:
“My words for other women are to always love themselves; to believe they can do anything that they set out to become; to know we all stumble but we get back up and continue to be the best that we can; and to know that what dreams they have will come true.” These are words we all can apply to our walk of life regardless of whether we are students, staff or faculty at UH.
Nancy was asked to share something about herself that most people do not know. She stated,
“I have been a board member for 3 years from 2002-2005 at Ocean View Medical Center to help the medical center be the best in assisting unfortunate and under privileged children.” Nancy has compassion to help those who cannot help themselves. She also shared the following: “I also skated professionally for the Cardinals in California for a number of years graduating from high school. I have been in choir for the past 20 years, in teaching bible study for children and in any other church functions.”
The WRC is pleased to feature Nancy Hay, a woman who empowers other women.
