We are moving!

picture of a moving truck

The Women's Resource Center is moving!  Due to other demands for our space in the University Center Satellite, the Women's Resource Center is moving into the University Center on December 4th. Until December 4th we will continue to occupy our current space and provide our regular programming. Although we will eventually end up in the space currently occupied by the Cougar Card and next to the WoodForest National Bank, we will temporarily be housed in the Lone Star room on the Second Floor of the UC across the hall from the Cougar Card location.  The location will change but we will continue to provide the same great resources, services, and programming.  Please come visit us in our new location as we will be ready and open for business on the first day of classes in the new semester. Plans are underway for an exciting grand re-opening celebration so stay tuned for details.

New Single Parent Support Group

Starting in Fall 2009 the WRC will be forming a new parent (both moms and dads) support group. Being a student is a challenge. Being a parent is a challenge. Being a parenting student is a double challenge. Come and visit with similarly situated folks for support and sharing.  Every Monday at 12:15pm in the Women's Resource Center.

Cougar Ally Training logo

Cougar Ally Training (CAT) will be offered through the Human Resource’s diversity and sensitivity training programs.  CAT is an interdepartmental collaboration that seeks to improve the campus climate for LGBTQ individuals through the provision of training to University of Houston faculty, staff, and students to enable them to become a Cougar Ally. A Cougar Ally is a person who has some knowledge of LGBTQ issues, is a good listener and can serve as a resource to LGBTQ students, staff. and faculty.  The next training will be held Spring 2010.  Stay tuned for more details.

Photo of Monica Perales

Dr. Monica Perales

Dr. Perales has degrees from Stanford University (PhD, 2004), University of Texas at El Paso (MA, 1996), and University of Texas at El Paso (BA, 1994).  Her first book, Smeltertown: Making and Remembering a Border Community, will be published by the University of North Carolina Press in Fall 2010.

She began teaching at UH as a tenure-track appointment in the fall of 2005.  Dr. Perales was a CMAS Visiting Scholar in 2004-2005. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the history department. Recently, Dr. Perales received the 2009 Women’s Studies Faculty Summer Fellowship.

When asked why she chooses to teach the subject that she teaches, she replied: “My interest in Mexican American/Chicana-o history came from a desire to know my own history.  My first book began with the family stories about a little neighborhood in El Paso called Smeltertown that were very much a part of my life as I was growing up.  As a trained historian, I used those stories as a springboard to investigate how migration, industrial capitalism, and everyday life shaped the experiences of generations of mexicanos living and working on the border.  I am very interested in how region, gender, class and the border have historically shaped the lives of Mexican origin people in the United States, and how they have related to one another and the world around them.  I try to bring these insights and interests into all of my classes.”

Words of encouragement you would give to students:

“Find your passion and pursue it.  Folks often say life is too short.  I would say life is too long to do something that doesn't bring you some measure of joy.”

Also, most students do not know that she is an avid fan of reality competition shows – Project Runway, Top Chef and The Amazing Race are her favorites.  She says, “Even though I lack any measurable sewing or cooking skills, I imagine that it would be exhilarating to get to be so creative and artistic!  And to get to travel the world:  That would be the ultimate!”

We commend Dr. Monica Perales for her great contributions to women and the whole UH campus community.
