Juanita Copley, associate professor of education, served as an editor of “Showcasing Mathematics for the Young Child,” a book which won a 2004 Apex Award of Excellence from The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The book received the award for its design, editorial content and overall communications excellence.

Michele Michot Foss, executive director for the Institute for Energy, Law & Enterprise, has been named to the board of advisors for Energy Magazine and Television. The publication reaches a broad range of energy sectors, including upstream, midstream, downstream, nuclear, thermal, solar, wind and other developing energy sources.

Mamie Moy, chemistry professor and director of the UH Center for Science and Mathematics Applied Resources (SMART), was recently awarded the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach by the American Chemical Society. Moy was recognized for a lifetime achievement in outreach to students and teachers.

Nancy B. Rapoport, Law Center dean, will be inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. Rapoport also has been selected to serve on the Library of Congress’ Advisory Committee for its project, “The Birth of the Dot-Com Era” and on the city of Houston’s Pension Governance Advisory Committee.

Landon Storrs, an associate professor of history, won the 2004 James Madison prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government for her article “Red Scare Politics and the Suppression of Popular Front Feminism,” which appeared in the Journal of American History 90, No. 2.

Karl Sparks, executive director of human resources, was elected to serve on the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association - College Retirement Equities Fund’s (TIAA-CREF) Customer Advisory Board. TIAA-CREF provides financial and retirement services to companies and institutions in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields.

David Tsai, lecturer in the Hines College of Architecture, was named a finalist in “Modern + Design + Function: Chicago Furniture Now,” a prestigious Chicago furniture design contest sponsored by TenbyTen magazine. His original steel side table was one of 25 pieces selected from a pool of 160.

Rodolfo Casparius, a senior lecturer and program director in the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, completed his 1,000th column with the Los Angeles newspaper La Opinion. His weekly column, "Burbujas," appears Sundays in the editorial section of the Spanish daily newspaper. He began writing the column in 1983 on issues concerning the Latino community: discrimination, immigration, education, border issues and politics.

Marissa Martin, a law student, received a $5,000 first prize from the Florida Bar’s William Trikel, Jr., Memorial Writing Awards competition for her paper titled, “In re Schiavo: Social, Legal and Ethical Perspectives.”

Sandy Frieden, executive director of the UH System’s distance education, was elected to the U.S. Distance Learning Association Board of Directors.
KUHT-TV, Channel 8 received two regional Emmy awards from the Lone Star Chapter of the National Television Academy. The award recognizes excellence in television in 19 markets in Texas. The winners are:

UH received the Credit Program of Excellence from the University Continuing Education Association (Region South) for its Discover U Program in the Texas Medical Center. The association also presented its Professional Continuing Educator Award to Steven Mintz, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of History and director of the American Cultures Program at UH.

Monit Cheung, professor of social work, received the 2004 Golden Harvest Award from the Asian American Family Counseling Center. The award recognizes the contributions of corporate and community leaders.

Carlos Lopez, director of the Small Business Development Center’s International Trade Center, received the Henry B. Gonzalez Latino Leadership Award from the Baytown Hispanic Forum.

Edward P. Sheridan, University Professor and Emeritus Senior Vice President and Provost, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Nova Southeastern University.
