Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7, interviewed Bauer College of Business executive professor Stephen Arbogast about UH’s Global Energy Management
Institute meeting. He also discussed the amount of capital that energy companies need to pursue exploration, production or refining projects on Smart Money.com.

William Fitzgibbon, College of Technology dean, was interviewed about UH’s new AT&T Technology Lab on Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7. The lab also was the subject of a story on KHCW-TV, Channel 39. Jim Granato, Center for Public Policy director, was interviewed about voter turnout on Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7. Granato and Robert Heath, professor of communication, also were interviewed about the Texas Congressional District 22 race. The radio station also reported that Kristopher Innanen, assistant professor of physics, won the J. Clarence Karcher Award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

KRIV-TV, Channel 26, interviewed communication professor Garth Jowett about the O.J. Simpson controversy and the incident involving racial slurs by Michael Richards.

Steven Mintz, John and Rebecca Moore Professor of History and director of the American Cultures Program, was quoted in a Washington Post article about single
military mothers who serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7, interviewed UH Anxiety Clinic director Peter Norton about receiving the Mentored Research Scientist Development Award.

Craig Pirrong, energy markets director for Global Energy Management Institute, was interviewed on NPR and CNBC about New York Mercantile Exchange
trading.

Nestor Rodriguez, co-director of the UH Center for Immigration Research and chair of sociology, is quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about how Hispanics
voted in the recent congressional elections.

AUGUST 2006

Daewon Byun, professor of atmospheric science and chemistry, was interviewed on Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7 about his development of a system to measure ozone levels in the air and his creation of a Web site that provides daily ozone forecasts. Byun directs the UH Air Quality Modeling Group.

On CNBC, Michael Economides, professor of chemical engineering, discussed the possibility of Iran cutting off oil supplies if the United Nations imposes sanctions.

Rupa Iyer, research associate professor in the College of Technology, was interviewed on Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7 about UH’s undergraduate degree program in biotechnology. The Texas Workforce Commission has given UH a $1 million grant to design the program.

On National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation, Carl Lindahl, the Martha Gano Houston Research Professor of English, discussed the Surviving Katrina and Rita in Houston project, which he co-directs. Lindahl also was interviewed about the project on Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7.

Ralph Metcalfe, professor of mechanical engineering and deputy director of biomedical engineering, and Ioannis Kakadiaris, associate professor of computer science, were interviewed on KHOU-TV, Channel 11, about UH scientists’ collaboration with the Texas Medical Center on creating new technology to check for blocked arteries that lead to heart attacks. The story also aired on Texas Cable News Network.

Craig Pirrong, professor of finance and director of energy markets for the Global Energy Management Institute, discussed trends in electronic trading on the Bloomberg Report.

Nestor Rodriguez, chair of the Department of Sociology, was interviewed on KXLN-TV, Channel 45, about immigration hearings being held around the United States. Rodriguez is the co-director of the Center for Immigration Research.

Ricardo Vilalta, assistant professor of computer science, was interviewed on Houston Public Radio, KUHF FM 88.7, about using data mining to classify various features of the Martian landscape. Vilalta is the co-director of the Machine Learning and Data Mining Group.

JUNE 2006

Elizabeth Gregory, associate professor of English, was quoted in a Newsweek article about women and late marriage.

Donna Kacmar, assistant professor of architecture, was interviewed on KUHF 88.7FM Houston Public Radio regarding her research on some of the city’s overlooked structures.

David Small, assistant vice president for student services, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about the fastest-growing sectors of the U.S. labor force and in one of the newspaper’s business columns. He also was quoted in a Houston Woman Magazine article about UH seniors using various methods to find jobs.

MAY 2006

A Chicago Tribune article referenced Andrew Achenbaum’s book titled “What is Retirement For?” Achenbaum is a professor of history and social work.

David Dow, University Distinguished Professor in the UH Law Center, discussed a law that changed the way the death penalty works in the United States on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

Donna Kacmar, assistant professor of architecture, was interviewed on KUHF 88.7FM Houston Public Radio regarding her research on some of the city’s overlooked structures.

KRIV-TV, Channel 26, aired a story regarding Rebecca Lee’s study on physical activity among ethnic minority women. Lee is an assistant professor of health and human performance.

The Washington Times quoted Raul Ramos, professor of history, in a story regarding the Houston high school principal who raised a Mexican flag on a campus pole.

KTHR-AM 740 interviewed Barton Smith, professor of economics, on the new Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Stacey A. Tovino, visiting professor of law, discussed the prosecution of midwives in a New York Times article.

The UH System and Houston-area community colleges joint admissions program was highlighted on Victoria’s KAVU-TV, Channel 2.

MARCH 2006

David R. Dow’s opinion editorial on U.S. Supreme Court Judge Samuel Alito appeared in the Houston Chronicle. His letter regarding unjust deportation appeared in the New York Times. Dow is University Distinguished Professor in the UH Law Center.

Michael Economides, professor of chemical engineering, discussed discovering oil on the Texas Cable News Network. He also was quoted about the price of natural gas in an International Herald Tribune article.

The New York Times quoted Richard Evans, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Psychology, in an article about how former Enron employees are faring.

Howard Karger, professor of social work, discussed his book “Shortchanged: Life and Debt in the Fringe Economy” in a USA Today article.

Phoenix’s KTVK-TV, Channel 3, aired a story about research on the waddle of penguins. Max Kurz, professor of health and human performance, is conducting the study.

Peter Norton, assistant professor of psychology, discussed the causes of anxiety on KUHF-FM 88.7 Houston Public Radio.

Craig Pirrong, professor of finance and director of energy markets for the Global Energy Management Institute, was quoted about hedge funds providing bonuses for energy traders on Bloomberg.com.

A story about the UH Law Center receiving more than $360,000 from Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott aired on several television and radio stations, including Texas Cable News Network; KHOU-TV, Channel 11; KPRC-TV, Channel 2; and KUHF-FM 88.7 Houston Public Radio.

OCTOBER 2005

On KTRK-TV, Channel 13, Richard Alderman, Dwight Olds Chair in Law and director of the Consumer Law Center, discussed legal questions surrounding Hurricane Katrina and explained upcoming changes in bankruptcy law.

On KHTV-TV, Channel 39, John J. Douglass, professor of law, was quoted in a story about Mayor Bill White’s popularity in dealing with Hurricane Katrina victims.

Michael Economides, professor of chemical engineering, discussed the price of oil on CNBC’s “Power Lunch.”

In a Houston Chronicle article, Todd Helwig, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Reagan Herman, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, discussed their project to develop a more effective, less expensive way to construct highway bridges

Forbes.com published an article regarding the election of Leroy L. Hermes as UH System Board of Regents chairman.

On KTRH-AM 740, Richard Murray, professor of political science, discussed same sex marriages.

On KXLN-TV, Channel 45, Nestor Rodriguez, professor of sociology, was quoted on the impact of the thousands of displaced New Orleans citizens arriving in Houston.

USA Today published an article on the College of Optometry’s efforts to extend its services to Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

The University of Houston was noted in a Houston Chronicle article about Texas schools offering in-state tuition to students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Several newspapers and television stations, including the Houston Chronicle and the Brown Daily Herald, reported that the UH Law Center will host Loyola University law students for the fall semester and that hundreds of displaced students had enrolled at UH.

SEPTEMBER 2005

On KTRK-TV, Channel 13, Richard Alderman, Dwight Olds Chair in Law and director of the Consumer Law Center, discussed the legal protections that consumers have when buying a house.

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture’s Design/Build Studio’s outdoor performing arts venue project for Alexander Hamilton Middle School was featured on Houston Public Radio, KUHF 88.7 FM and in an article in the Houston Chronicle.

Suncica Canic, professor of mathematics, was featured in a Houston Chronicle story about her receiving the 2005 Top Houston Women in Technology Award from the Association for Women in Computing.

Michael Economides, professor of chemical engineering, discussed oil prices on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” program. He also explained Saudi Arabian politics in the wake of the death of the king’s half brother on Houston Public Radio, KUHF 88.7 FM.

Yuriy Fofanov, assistant professor of computer science and of biology and biochemistry and director of the UH Bioinformatics Lab; George Fox, professor of biology and biochemistry and adjunct professor of chemical engineering; and Richard C. Willson, professor of chemical engineering and professor of biology and biochemistry, were highlighted in a Houston Chronicle article. The article focused on the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency grant they received to study DNA probes for detecting emerging or engineered pathogens.

Frank Holt, professor of history, appeared on the History Channel program “The Mystery of the Afghan Gold.”

The Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management was mentioned in a Houston Chronicle article about its five-day camp for high school students interested in hospitality careers.

Lynn Mitchell, director of the religious studies program, discussed the opening of Lakewood Church on “Paula Zahn Now” on CNN.

A UH program that provides free English classes for UH staff who speak only minimal English was featured in a Houston Chronicle article.

JULY 2005

The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture’s Design/Build Studio’s outdoor performing arts and film projection canopy for Alexander Hamilton Middle School was featured in July’s Texas Architect magazine.

Richard Armstrong, associate professor of modern and classical languages and director of the classical studies program, discussed ancient Greece on Chicago’s WBEZ-FM, 91.5.

Geoffrey Brune, associate professor of architecture, wrote an article on the design of a local building in July’s Texas Architect magazine.

Jill Bush, assistant professor of exercise and physiology, discussed females using steroids on KHOU-TV, Channel 11, and Texas Cable News Network.

Michael Economides, professor of chemical engineering, discussed oil trading in a New York Times article.

Seth J. Chandler, vice dean for academic affairs and professor at the UH Law Center, discussed life support issues on KHOU-TV, Channel 11.

Craig B. Clayton, director of the Institute for Diversity and Cross-Cultural Management, discussed efforts to diversify the corporate workforce in the Dallas Morning News.

Sarah Fishman, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, discussed SAT’s new handwritten essay in a Houston Chronicle article.

Rebecca Lee, assistant professor of health and human performance, discussed lifestyle choices that affect health in a Houston Chronicle article. Lee also discussed her $3 million grant to study obesity and the cultural factors that lead to the condition in Houston Style magazine.

Tatcho Mindiola, director of the Center for Mexican American Studies, discussed Cinco de Mayo on 740 KTRH-AM.

Steven H. Mintz, professor of history, discussed parental duties in the Wichita Times-Record and childhood during the 1950s on Minnesota Public Radio, 89.3 FM.

Lynn E. Mitchell, director of the religious studies program, professor and resident scholar, discussed Nostradamus’ prophecies on KXLN-TV, Channel 45.

Amaury Nora, professor of educational leadership and cultural studies and associate dean for research and faculty development in the College of Education, was acknowledged in the magazine Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education for being named a Senior Scholar by the American College Personnel Association.

Nestor Rodriguez, chair and professor of sociology, discussed Mexico’s proposal to seal the border on WALA-TV, Channel 10, in Pensacola, Fl.

Robert Sheridan, executive director of student financial aid, discussed refinancing education loans in the Houston Chronicle.
