Donald Van Nieuwenhuise, Petroleum Geoscience Programs director and research associate professor in the Department of Geosciences, is quoted in an online Texas Cable News article regarding underground nuclear reactors.

APRIL 2007

Richard Alderman, UH Law Center associate dean, was interviewed about who pays medical expenses for people who get sick from contaminated or tainted food in a story aired on KTRK-TV, Channel 13. Alderman also is the Consumer Law Center director and holds the Dwight Olds Chair in Law.

Audrius Brazdeikis, research assistant professor of physics, was quoted in a Science Daily article about a handheld tool he co-created for staging and treating various cancers.

Paul Chu, professor of physics and T.L.L. Temple Foundation Chair in Science, was quoted in a BBC online article regarding super materials.

Steven Craig, professor of economics, discussed a bill that would raise the federal minimum wage in a story aired on KTRK-TV, Channel 13.

Michael Economides, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, was interviewed on KPRC-TV, Channel 2, about ExxonMobil record profits.

Ioannis A. Kakadiaris, Eckhard Pfeiffer Professor in the Department of Computer Science and director of UH’s Computational Biomedicine Lab, was interviewed on KTRK-TV, Channel 2, about the face recognition program developed by the lab. He also is a professor in the Cullen College of Engineering Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Richard Murray, professor of political science, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Murray also was quoted in a Washington Times article about Gov. Rick Perry.

Bernhard Rappenglueck, associate professor of geosciences, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about Asia’s soot, which causes weather imbalance.

Floyd Robinson, UH Health Center director, was interviewed on KTRK-TV, Channel 13, about sexually transmitted diseases.

The UH Law Center and the Environmental and Energy Law and Policy Journal were cited in a Houston Chronicle article about hybrid vehicles.

FEBRUARY 2007

Daily Business News published an article about Donald L. Birx’s keynote address at a BioHouston forum. Birx is vice president for research.

Jerome Crowder, research assistant professor of anthropology, and Cliff Dacso, director of the Abramson Center for the Future of Health at UH, were quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about the launching of a wireless project in the Pecan Park neighborhood.

Patricia Gray, research professor at the UH Law Center, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about a state bill that would force care of end-stage patients.

Lynn Mitchell, director of religious studies, was interviewed on KTRK-TV, Channel 13, about extramarital affairs.

Richard Murray, professor of political science, was quoted in a Fort Worth Star Telegram article regarding allegations of officials manipulating elections with polling locations.

Hanadi Rifai, associate professor of environmental engineering, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about the best way to clean an industrial waste pit that leaks the carcinogen dioxin into the San Jacinto River.

Houston Public Radio, KUHF-FM 88.7, interviewed Nestor Rodriguez, chair of the Department of Sociology, and Joseph Vail, clinical associate professor in legal practice, about trends in the smuggling of illegal immigrants. Rodriguez also was interviewed about the state comptroller’s report on the economic impact of illegal immigration on KHOU-TV, Channel 11, and Texas Cable News Network.

KHOU-TV, Channel 11, aired a story about Melissa Scott-Pandorf’s work on what astronauts may wear on the Moon. She is a doctoral health and human performance student.

The Houston Business Journal published a story about UH’s finance department ranking among the Top 10 most productive programs in the United States by Academic Analytics’ Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index.

JANUARY 2007

Steven Craig, professor of economics, was interviewed on KHOU-TV, Channel 11 about consumer shopping behavior the day after Thanksgiving.

Russell Curtis, professor of sociology, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle story regarding the Houston Texans.

David Dow, University Distinguished Professor, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle story on the recusal of a prosecutor in the retrial of Anthony Graves. His opinion editorial “Hanging Saddam High Would be Our Low” appeared in the Houston Chronicle.

Victor B. Flatt, the A.L. O’Quinn Chair in Environmental Law, wrote a Houston Chronicle opinion editorial on the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria region’s
failure to meet Environmental Protection Agency’s ozone requirements.

Amber Giannoni Gaume, assistant clinical professor of optometry, was cited in CBS19.tv story on preteens wearing contact lenses.

Allen Grundy, a program coordinator at the Office of Veteran Services, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article about veteran entrepreneurship.

Arthur Guloy, associate professor of chemistry, and John Bear, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics dean, were quoted in a Semiconductor Online News story on the work of a team of researchers led by Guloy to synthesize a new form of germanium.

William Hawes, professor of communication, was interviewed on KTRK-TV, Channel 13 about the popularity of pornography.

The India Herald quoted Rupa Iyer, director of biotechnology programs, in a story regarding the Texas Workforce Commission’s $1 million grant to build a comprehensive biotechnology program at UH.

Garth Jowett, professor of communication, was quoted in a USA Weekend.com story that compared theatrical and pre-release versions of the 1933 film “Baby Face.”

Donna Kacmar, assistant professor of architecture, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle story on the exhibition “Accommodation in Houston: Beer, Burgers and Barbacoa.”

The New York Times quoted athletics director Dave Maggard in a story about the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

The Houston Chronicle profiled Tatcho Mindiola, Center for Mexican American Studies director.

Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education profiled Michael A. Olivas, William B. Bates Distinguished Chair of Law and Institute of Higher Education Law and
Governance director.

Jeremy Pettit, assistant professor of psychology, discussed holiday depression on KPRC-TV, Channel 2.

Law professor Nancy Rapoport was quoted in a Houston Chronicle story on an Enron lawsuit.

KRIV-TV, Channel 26, reported that UH’s Small Business Development Center and NASA helped with the invention of a device to remove downed
electrical power poles.

Arthur K. Smith, University Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a Houston Chronicle article regarding Cuban exiles.
