The Chinese Historians in the United States (CHUS) organization
bestowed the Academic Excellence Award to UH history professor
Cong Xiaoping. The award recognizes her research for her book, “Teachers’ Schools
and the Making of the Modern Chinese Nation-State” (University
of British Columbia Press, 2007).
Cong’s work was reviewed by three outstanding scholars
in the field of modern China. She was selected unanimously
for the award.
One reviewer commented, "Based on solid materials, including
archives, newspapers, journals, personal records and other
documents, Cong Xiaoping has successfully restructured the
development of modern Chinese teachers' schools and their social
impact. By focusing on the unique nature of Chinese teachers'
schools, this book discusses the transformation of both.”
Cong is a scholar of late imperial and 20th century China,
focusing on women's history, intellectual history and the history
of modern education in China. She has been with the university
since 2001.
