The University of Houston has named Beverly McPhail, researcher
and lecturer in the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW),
as the interim director of the Women’s Resource Center
(WRC), effective Monday,
July 17.
McPhail, who also teaches in the UH Women’s Studies Program,
will serve until the university fills the position that became
vacant after Susan Rosthal retired. McPhail will work 20 hours
a week at the WRC.
McPhail’s previous positions include adjunct faculty
member at UH GCSW, adjunct instructor at The University of Texas
at Austin School of Social Work and counselor and group leader
at the Houston-based Family Service Center Batterers Treatment
Program and General Family Services.
She is the author of numerous journal articles, including Prosecutorial
Perspectives on Gender-Biased Hate Crimes, which appeared in
“Violence against Women.” In 2003, she received
the Dean Jack Otis Social Policy Award from The University of
Texas at Austin School of Social Work for her dissertation on
prosecutorial decision-making in hate crime enhancements and
a grounded theory of justice construction.
