December is the month for giving, and the University of Houston
Staff Council is sticking to this tradition with its annual
Sock and Blanket Drive.
The 2005 drive runs through Friday, Dec. 16 and benefits the
Star of Hope Mission and the Harris County Protective Services
Guardianship Program (HCOSGP).
Each year, the council collects blankets, socks, clothes and
other items to be donated to charity organizations. Donation
boxes are located throughout campus and will be collected on
Monday, Dec. 9 (see below for box locations).
The need for goods such as clothing and bedding is at an all-time
high this year because of the numerous families displaced by
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
“The campus came together to assist the victims of Katrina
and Rita, and we know the UH community will continue to exhibit
goodwill during the holiday season,” said Charles Henry,
College of Pharmacy business administrator and Staff Council
president. “Even the smallest donations can make a big
difference.”
Since 1907, Star of Hope has provided food, clothing, shelter
and other services to homeless individuals and families. (Click

HCOSGP serves as legal guardian for 1,300 adults in the Houston
area, who are disabled, ill or elderly. Many of them have no
family from whom to receive gifts, so HCOSGP is requesting donations
of new items that will serve as presents. (Click

Donations will be gathered on Dec. 19 and delivered to Star
of Hope and HCOSGP, Anyone wanting to assist with delivering
the donations can contact Rebecca Szwarc, administrative assistant
in Residential Life and Housing, at 713-743-6030.
