The University of Houston’s 2005 Scholarship and Community
Conference on Friday, Nov. 4, will focus on how private philanthropy
impacts a university and its faculty.
Titled “Professors and Private Philanthropy,” this
UH and Faculty Senate sponsored event will offer presentations
by Michael Rierson, UH vice president for university advancement,
and Robert C. Allen, professor of American studies, history
and communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, as well as other development and fundraising professionals.
“Great universities are not dependent on state allocations
and student tuition fees alone to create and sustain excellence,”
said Allen Warner, Faculty Senate president and professor of
curriculum and instruction. “There are sources that cite
a virtual linear correlation between the size of a university’s
endowment and its academic reputation. Endowments are gifts
that keep on giving. They support research, scholarship, teaching
and students.”
Among the topics to be discussed at this event are:
- Resources available to assist faculty members in attracting
private gifts
- The items private foundations are most willing to fund
- Why alumni give back to their alma mater
- Building a donor-friendly climate
- The definition of a comprehensive campaign and how to prepare
for it
“It takes a community to be successful in private fundraising,”
said UH President Jay Gogue. “I am looking forward to
this particular conference and future discussions on this topic.”
The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in
the Waldorf-Astoria Room of the Hilton University of Houston
Hotel. Allen’s lunch address, “School of Fish Out
of Water: Faculty Leaders and Fundraising,” will begin
at noon.
There is no cost for the conference or lunch, but registration
is required. To register, contact Mary Brantley, Faculty Senate
