The application deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 19.

It can take months and sometimes, even up to a year, for a company to identify new markets for its goods and services. Selected University of Houston students will have only three nights to do just that during the university’s first Export Fellows Program (EFP) Oct. 25, Oct. 27 and Nov. 1.

Sponsored by UH College of Technology’s Information and Logistics Technology Department and the Houston District Export Council, EFP engages students with a detailed project in which they’ll select a product to market and attempt to successfully export it internationally. The program also offers them a dialogue with engineers, project managers and transportation professionals. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive Export Fellows certificates from the U.S. Department of Commerce

“The program’s business development project can definitely have tangible applications. A previous EFP participant used his ideas to export $1.3 million in used cars to Kazakhstan.” said Duaine Priestley, director of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Assistance Center.

Priestley is one of the program’s instructors and a UH graduate. Other guest lecturers will include Jeff Lamb, Station Manager at AIT Worldwide Logistics and adjunct UH logistics faculty member, and Paula Swain Priestley, director of project finance at El Paso Corporation.

The logistics/export field is the second largest employment sector in the United States and has been cited as a hot career track by the U.S. News and World Report Career Guide. Priestley feels the Export Fellow certificate will be a boon to students entering the job market.

“This certification will show a prospective employer that these students know how to navigate the international trade and export markets, as well as identify additional resources to help a company generate new revenue through exports,” he said.

EFP has earned a national program excellence award from the North American Small Business Trade Educators.

The program is free and open to UH students with seating preference given to majors in the College of Technology’s Logistics Technology Program. All applications to the program must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 in room 312 of the Technology 2 Building.
