In its efforts to keep the campus as safe as possible, the
University of Houston Department of Public Safety Fire Marshal’s
Office will inspect facilities more frequently for potential
fire hazards.
Although the department has always conducted inspections, it
now has a specialist solely dedicated to conducting inspections.
“Previously, our department conducted inspections while
performing other duties at campus facilities,” said Bob
Bowden, UH fire marshal. “We were recently advised by
the State Fire Marshal’s Office to establish a routine
inspection program. Now, we’ve assigned our arson investigator,
Bill Courtney, to inspect buildings throughout campus and make
follow-up visits based on his findings.”
Recently, Bowden accompanied Courtney for inspections of McElhinney
Hall, Fred J. Heyne Building and Farish Hall. Among the most
common fire hazards he observed in offices were misuse of extension
cords, open fire doors, cluttered corridors and excessive paper
storage.
“Candles are another item that we’re seeing that
are fire hazards,” Bowden said. “Even if they’re
unlit and have no wick, the State Fire Marshal’s Office
indicates that offices should not have candles, and we have
to follow this rule.”
During the last round of inspections, Bowden and Courtney left
notices on the desks of those who were in violation of fire
codes. Soon, they’ll return to see if any problems have
been corrected and to offer consultation regarding fire safety.
“This isn’t one-way communication,” Bowden
said. “We’re available to answer questions and to
make recommendations. We’re also here to address concerns
and even provide fire safety training when necessary.”
Bowden added that faculty, staff and students are welcome to
contact the fire marshal office at 713-743-1635 with any questions
regarding inspections or fire safety. They also can visit the
office’s Web site at http://www.uh.edu/fire/index.html
to obtain information on fire safety policies.
