STAFF MEMBERS GEARING UP
FOR COUGAR FIRST IMPRESSIONS

There’s only one chance to make a good first impression, and the University of Houston is determined to make the most of its initial contact with students this fall.

For the past eight years, UH’s Staff Council has sponsored Cougar First Impressions (CFI), a fall semester kickoff event that welcomes students to campus. CFI returns Aug. 22 – 23 with more than 600 staff members stationed at tents and tables across campus handing out bottled water, campus maps and other helpful items. Among the most valuable commodities they’ll provide, however, are directions to classrooms, administrative offices and other locations.

“This event is very important for setting a positive tone for students,” said Joe Papick, Staff Council president and director of the Child Welfare Education Project in the Graduate School of Social Work. “Some of them are attending college for the first time and need as much guidance as possible.”

CFI also will provide students the opportunity to sign up for parking permits at the following tents and tables:

  • Entrance 14 on Cullen Boulevard
  • The Philip G. Hoffman (PGH) Building breezeway
  • Cullen Performance Hall
  • Lot 20A on Calhoun Road
  • The patio next to Moores School of Music

“This is a big help to both students and the Parking and Transportation staff,” said Bob Browand, director of Parking and Transportation. “Many students often wait until the start of the fall semester to sign up for parking. Being able to do this at several locations helps them maximize their time on such a busy day.”

Students can also visit pick up literature covering a range of computing topics at a booth sponsored by UH’s Information Technology (IT). Located in the P.G. Hoffman Hall breezeway, the IT booth will be adjacent to the temporarily-relocated IT Support Center, which will move from the basement of the M.D. Anderson Library to Room 116 of PGH.

CFI volunteers will meet at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17 in the Kiva Room of Farish Hall for training and to receive CFI T-shirts.

It’s still not too late to lend a hand to this event. To volunteer, contact Barbara Hubbard, registration and academic records coordinator, at 713-743-9349. Staff members must consult with their supervisors to arrange for time off during CFI.

It’s also not too late to make donations to the event. Promotional items such as pens, pencils, note pads and stickers can be donated, as well as refreshments or other items to be distributed at tents and tables. To make a donation to CFI, contact B. Renae Milton, Staff Council program coordinator, at 713-743-1578.
