UH CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

About Black History Month

Black History Month was the brainchild of Carter G. Woodson, the son of former slaves. Woodson, who earned a doctorate from Harvard University, established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915. A year later, he created the Journal of Negro History.

In 1926, he launched Negro History Week to bring national attention to the historic contributions of blacks throughout American history.

February is being celebrated across the nation as Black History Month. At the University of Houston, numerous events are planned in recognition of the contributions made by African Americans.

A speech by Houston Mayor Bill White tops the list of activities. On Feb. 17, White will offer his perspective on the legal profession from noon to 12:45 p.m. in Krost Hall Auditorium. Sponsored by the UH Law Center’s Black Law Students Association, the event is free of charge, but an RSVP to Briefcase@uh.edu or 713-743-2201 is requested.

Other events include a film and archival lecture series sponsored by the African American Studies Program. An event that explores the history of Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the emancipation of slaves in the United States, occurs Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the University Center’s Houston Room. This free event will begin at 7 p.m. and will include musical performances and an array of soul food.

Last week, Lisa Nichols read and signed her book, “Chicken Soup for the African American Soul: Celebrating and Sharing Our Culture One Story at a Time.” The book was an Essence magazine bestseller.
