MAJOR PARKING CHANGES IN EFFECT
FOR SPRING SEMESTER
As the University of Houston
improves its parking with a new $25.8 million garage, the campus
will temporarily lose spaces, but an additional 714 new spots have
been created to accommodate the UH community.
Parking Lot 1A on Calhoun Road will close as a result
of the garage’s construction. Those who regularly use this
lot can park in either Lot 4A at the corner of Calhoun Road and
Wheeler Street or in Lot 9C at Wheeler Street and Cullen Boulevard.
Shuttle service is available from both lots.
Dave Irvin, associate vice president of plant operations,
said that the 714 new spaces are scattered throughout campus, and
the bulk of the expansion was concentrated on student spaces.
“During the winter break, we added 200 spaces
in Lot 4A on Wheeler Avenue and 200 spaces in Lot 8A on Cullen Boulevard,”
he said.
Parking enforcement personnel will be positioned
at various campus locations to offer directions to returning students
and provide traffic control Tuesday, Jan. 18 – Thursday, Jan.
20. They will be located at the following lots and entrances:
- Entrance 1 at Lot 1A.
- Entrance 1 at Lots 1B and 1E
- Lot 1A at Calhoun Road
- Lot 4A off of Wheeler Street
- Lot 12A off of Wheeler Street
Students, who park in Lot 1A with Commuter parking
passes, will be allowed to convert their passes to less expensive
Economy or Economy Plus passes at a pro-rated share of the cost
difference between the permits.
Bob Browand, director of parking and transportation
services, said that students who purchased a Commuter pass for $114
will receive a rebate of $47 for converting to an Economy pass and
$37 for converting to an Economy Plus pass.
Passes can be converted in the Office of Parking
and Transportation Services Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 7
p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline
to convert passes is Thursday, Feb. 10.
