BLAFFER GALLERY WINS
INTERNATIONAL AWARD
Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum
of the University of Houston, has received an early Christmas gift
— international recognition for its “Chuck
Close Prints: Process and Collaboration” exhibit.
The International Association of Art Critics bestowed
a second place award for Best Monographic Show Nationally for the
exhibit, which provides a 30-year survey of Close’s career
in printmaking illustrated through etchings, lithography, woodblock
prints, handmade paper and silkscreens.
“It is very gratifying to receive recognition
from such a highly regarded and discerning group of critics and
art writers,” said Terrie Sultan, gallery curator and director.
The exhibit opened at the gallery in September 2003
and will complete its tour of 10 American metropolitan and university
museums by 2007, with a possible extension of the tour through 2008.
Sultan organized the exhibit, which is on display at the Knoxville
Museum of Art.
Sultan, who has served as gallery director since
2000, has organized more than 40 exhibitions and publications. One
of her recent exhibits — Bob
Knox: Non-Fiction Painting — was the recipient of the
International Association of Art Critics/USA award for Best Show
of an Emerging/Under-known Artist last year.
