“One of the benefits of being part of [the Center for Student Empowerment] is you feel like you have your own personal space in a very large place, also having your own mentor decreases the hassle of finding help.”

Afrah Bashir is in her second semester at the University of Houston, majoring in Computer Information Systems. As a first-generation student it is important for me to continue my education and become a role model for my siblings and future generations. I want to show the world that it is possible for someone to accomplish their goals no matter where they come from. I’m an Ambassador for the National Honor Society of High School Scholars and a proud recipient of the Ambassador scholarship for 2017. I also received the “1000 dream fund scholarship”, which was given to empower women not only for their academic background but also for their choice of choosing a male-dominated major.

What inspired your interest in computer information systems?
I’ve always been interested in how technology has changed every aspect of our lives. Growing up, I was the one who fixed minor software issues on our family computer, and it got me wondering I could do that for the rest of my life! Majoring in Computer Information System will expand my opportunities not only in the IT field but also in the business world.

What would be your dream job or dream accomplishment?
My dream accomplishment will be to have my own IT company.

How did you hear about CSE? Or What has been the biggest benefit of being a part of CSE?
I heard about CSE at the New Student Orientation. One of the benefits of being part of it is you feel like you have your own personal space in a very large place, also having your own mentor decreases the hassle of finding help.

What would you say to someone experience a personal challenge that is affecting their academics?
One of the most helpful advice I received in high school was, “Keep your emotions at home, and when you are at school show you A-game.” Even in dark times there is still hope that brings light.
