The Division of Research (DOR) is pleased to announce a new ‘DOR Fellows’ Program that provides an opportunity for a faculty member to develop her/his academic leadership skills and serve the University of Houston within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer. A DOR Fellow will be appointed for a six-month period working within the Division of Research on specific projects of interest to both the Fellow, DOR and UH. It is expected that the selected Fellow will start in spring 2018.
The DOR is responsible for supporting, managing and leading all research activities in the University of Houston System. This includes enhancing research infrastructure, managing pre- and post-award processes including compliance and reporting, pursuing and developing university-industry partnerships, developing intra-university focused research areas and collaborations, funding mechanisms for seed projects and developing resource packages for faculty recruitment and retention.
The selected Fellow will have the opportunity to work on a six-month project that will further the research mission of DOR while giving the faculty fellow valuable exposure and experience in research management (for example, review of the structure of research divisions in top universities, analysis of the organization of DOR, and recommendation for change). More specifically, the Fellow will help develop and implement plans for improving processes or developing new processes that will increase efficiency of DOR.
The Fellow will spend one month with each of the six offices of DOR, including the Office of Research Policies, Compliance and Committees, Office of Research Development, Animal Care Operations, Office of Contracts and Grants (both pre- and post-award), Office of Intellectual Property Management, and shadowing the VP for Research and Technology Transfer. The Fellow will write a one-page report on her/his experience in each of the DOR offices, as well as write a final report on the six-month project. The scope of work and responsibilities of the DOR Faculty Fellow will be developed in consultation with the fellow’s department head and/or dean.
Faculty candidates must be tenured at the associate or full professor level with demonstrated excellence in research and/or university service (department, college, or university wide).
The Fellow will meet regularly with the VP for Research and Technology Transfer to discuss experiences on the job and to evaluate progress. The Fellow will be encouraged to seek mentoring (internal and/or external) opportunities outside of the DOR, including peer mentoring.
This position reports directly to the VP for Research and Technology Transfer.
Eligible faculty members who are interested in the opportunity and would like additional information should contact: Dr. Amr Elnashai (elnashai@Central.UH.EDU), VP for Research and Technology Transfer or Dr. Mary Ann Ottinger (maotting@Central.UH.EDU), AVP for Research.
Please submit a copy of your CV and a Statement of Interest indicating specific aspects of research administration that are of interest to email@example.com.
A subcommittee of the Research and Scholarship Committee (RSC) of the Faculty Senate will evaluate application materials and make a recommendation to the VP for Research and Technology Transfer.
