The Department of Educational Psychology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in School Psychology to begin in August 2009.
The University of Houston is the most ethnically diverse comprehensive research university in the United States, and the Department of Educational Psychology has been designated to figure prominently in the future growth and Tier 1 scholarly aspirations of the University.
The relatively new PhD Program in School Psychology recently submitted its APA accreditation Self-Study. The Program faculty adhere to the scientist-practitioner training model, and the primary theoretical approach is ecological-behavioral. The position involves establishing and conducting an individual research agenda, preferably with an emphasis on the translation of research to practice; teaching graduate courses in assessment, intervention, or consultation; and supervising doctoral student research and practicum experiences.
Successful candidates will possess the doctorate, preferably from an APA accredited school psychology program, and can become license eligible as a psychologist in Texas. Experience as a school psychologist in a diverse K-12 setting is preferred. Successful candidates must be prepared to participate in efforts to pursue external research funding for collaborative research, practice, and policy projects complementary to the broad research areas of the College of Education.
The remarkable diversity of the University and the wealth of training opportunities in the diverse Houston area help ensure that issues of individual and cultural diversity and underserved populations inform each student's research, training and practice experiences.
The Ph.D. in School Psychology Program is unique in enjoying joint course offerings with the Learning Support Center at the Texas Children's Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine (TCH/BCM). Our students select from a range of school-based practicum sites in local school districts, and several advanced practicum sites where supervision is provided by licensed psychologists. The latter include several specialty clinics in the TCH/BCM (e.g., Pediatric Neuropsychology, Primary Care Pediatrics, Disruptive Behavior Disorders, Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics), the Pediatric Neuro-oncology Unit at the M. D. Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital, the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, and the Harris County Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority Mental Retardation and Autism Unit.
Screening of applicants will begin August 1, 2008 and will continue until the position is filled.
Applicants should submit a letter of application/interest which describes
- area of current research interest and external funding history or potential,
- teaching experience and philosophy,
and
- interest and qualifications for the position.
