GRAPHIC ELEMENTS

The character of a university is built upon its traditions, those activities, events, words, and symbols that remain unchanged over the years. The University of Houston logotype, the interlocking UH logo, and the many other graphic elements associated with UH have a rich history and have become synonymous with our university and its mission.

By using these official elements in the correct manner, you safeguard our traditions and instill a sense of pride and respect in your intended audience.

Following is some information that will help you implement these elements in the most effective manner.

The University of Houston Logotype

The University of Houston logotype is the graphic depiction of the name “University of Houston” in a type format. It is a one-of-a-kind signature, which identifies our university and projects our unique identity.

In the official logotype, the words “University” and “Houston” are all upper case in the Futura Extra Bold type style, separated by the word “of” which is all lower case in the Century Old Style Italic type style.

The logotype can be presented in a regular and condensed form, depending upon the spacing of the letters. The logotype on letterhead stationery is an example of the regular or long form. The condensed form reduces the spacing between letters so the logotype can fit on smaller publications.

Regular or long form:

Condensed form:

The fonts and letter spacing of the logotype have been calibrated by UH Printing Services and can be obtained through the Office of Publications in digital format. There is no need to attempt to replicate the logo.

The university does not have a site agreement with Adobe to place these fonts on every printer and computer on campus; if you would like to purchase these fonts for your own use please contact the Office of Publications (713-743-8170) for assistance.

The Interlocking UH Logo

Collegiate symbols are a long-standing and well-respected tradition in higher education. Alumni, students, faculty, and staff instantly recognize their university by its logo and often wear that logo with great pride.

The interlocking UH logo is the trademarked graphic symbol of the University of Houston. It can be used with the logotype to form the complete official signature of the university.

The University of Houston Seal

UH Seal, sample only (Sample only.)

According to historical accounts, the UH seal is the coat of arms of General Sam Houston. The seal was adopted for use by the university in 1938 in conjunction with construction of the new UH campus.

The seal is an official, trademarked academic symbol of the University of Houston. It is not to be used interchangeably with the UH logo.

The seal is reserved for academic use only by the Office of the President and the Provost’s Office. Other uses must be approved by the Associate Vice President for University Relations. If you have questions regarding the proper use of the seal, please contact the Office of Publications at 713-743-8170.

The “Learning. Leading.” Image Campaign Logo

On February 1, 2000, the university launched a five-year multi-million dollar image campaign to create a greater appreciation of our strengths among key audiences. This image campaign allows us to project the proper image of the university in print, television, and radio.

The image campaign logo must be printed in the following colors:

Learning.Leading.Logo Red

Black with Cougar red (PMS 185)

Learning.Leading Logo Black

All black

Reversed Learning.Leading Logo White

All white (reversed out)

Reversed Learning.Leading Logo Red

Reversed out of black with the interlocking UH and the rule in Cougar red, with all type being white

(Samples only.)

Key to presenting a strong and consistent image is the correct use of the image campaign logo. The trademarked “Learning. Leading.” image campaign logo was developed by McCann-Erickson Southwest to be used in all aspects of the advertising campaign. It was carefully crafted to reinforce the name of the university while connecting our logo with the two words that represent our primary mission: learning and leading.

While the image campaign is still active (through 2005), it is strongly recommended that you feature the image campaign logo either on the front or back of your publication. The image campaign logo is available in digital format from the Office of Publications (713-743-8170).

The Cougar Image

UH Cougar (Sample only.)

The official UH cougar mascot photograph was taken by photographer Pam Francis. It is not a logo, but a copyrighted graphic element, to be used as cover art to represent the entire UH community.

This fine photograph projects the overall strength of the university and when used consistently and correctly unifies the many different programs on campus. Therefore, other photographs of cougars should not be substituted.
Digital copies of the cougar image are available from the Office of Publications.

The Official University of Houston Colors

As with all of the graphic elements, the school colors have a rich historical tradition and are immediately identifiable amongst internal and external audiences. By displaying the official colors prominently in your publication, you declare that you are part of the UH family.

The official colors of the University of Houston are Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) 185 red, black, and white. To provide greater flexibility in designing materials, Pantone PMS 465 “Cougar Tan” has recently been added.
