News/PublicityAWARDSReal Estate & Construction ReviewThe University of Houston-Downtown Shea Street Building and Vine Street Garage has received recognition as a Building of America Project and was featured in the Real Estate & Construction Review – 2008 Texas Edition. Each Building of America project is highlighted in a case study that incorporates commentary from the project’s owner/developer, consultants, architect, and contractors who explain how teamwork helped them design and build one of Texas’ most important, innovative, or unique new construction or renovation projects. Selected from hundreds of other nominated projects, it will receive the Building of America project distinction.

The award consists of 15 categories; the UHD project is being honored in the “Community Impact” category. As a winner, the project was featured in the April 4th edition of the Houston Business Journal. The University of Houston-Downtown Shea Street Building and Vine Street Garage was selected to appear in the 2008 American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase issue…the premier competition honoring educational interior design excellence. The project will be profiled in the August 2008 issue of American School & University. It will also be featured online in the “Explore the Gallery” section of http://www.schooldesigns.com in Fall 2008.
The University of Houston School of Communication Computer Lab Renovation project was selected to appear in the 2008 American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase issue which will be available in August 2008. Facilities Planning and Construction is the recipient of the 2008 Client of the Year Award which was presented by Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS).
The University of Houston Science and Engineering Research Center is rated an exemplary project and has been selected for recognition and publication in the October 2008 issue of Buildings Magazine and on http://www.buildings.com. The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) was created in 1973 by small group of professional services firm leaders who recognized the need to sharpen skills, pool resources, and work together to create business opportunities. Today, SMPS represents a dynamic network of 6,500 marketing and business development professionals from architectural, engineering, planning, interior design, construction, and specialty consulting firms located throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Society and its 53 chapters benefit from the support of 3,250 design and building firms, encompassing 80% of the Engineering News-Record Top 500 Design Firms and Top 400 Contractors. Buildings MagazineSeveral building projects at UH have received additional recognition for their designs from BOMA, the Building Owners and Managers Association International. This organization is one of the largest professional industry organizations in the world, is widely recognized as a leader in Facilities Management and Design and includes building owners, designers, engineers, architects, contractors and consultants in government, education, industry and private business. Each year BOMA honors the top Interior designs and the top new buildings in the US in all types of buildings. This year they chose to honor 36 buildings and interiors for “design innovation” in various categories recognizing various building types. The UH Welcome Center and the UH Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center both were honored with Design Innovation awards in their respective categories (Higher Education New Construction and Higher Education renovation/Interiors respectively). Both will be featured in BOMA’s publication Buildings in October 2007. They are the first Texas higher education buildings to be so honored. In addition those projects which won design innovation awards went judged by an additional professional jury consisting of two construction and facilities management professionals, an architect, two interior designers, and the Buildings magazine editorial team for consideration for Awards of Excellence. Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center received an Award of Excellence for as the best project in Higher Education. Only 5 projects nationwide were selected for Awards of Excellence.
Keeping Houston BeautifulThe University of Houston’s College of Technology Courtyard has been selected to receive a Keep Houston Beautiful Honorable Mention Award in the 2007 Mayor’s Proud Partners competition. The awards luncheon is set for Friday, December 3rd at the InterContinental Hotel.

Groundskeeping Team Featuring on Houston's Fox 26 NewscastThe University of Houston Groundskeeping team was featured on Houston’s Fox 26 Newscast regarding the installation of native plants on the roof of the new Burdette Keeland Jr. Design Exploration Center. The green roof on the Keeland Building will join a handful of green roofs in Houston. Those include the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the Marriott Houston Downtown.
